Baseball may be the American pastime, but it hasn't been the most popular sport since the late 1960s. Professional American basketball and football have become increasingly popular sports. Football is the most popular sport in the United States, with basketball checking in at third. Both sports bring in a large amount of revenue into the cities & states that own these professional teams. Professional players playing either sport usually have salaries that can start in the millions. And both basketball and football are considered contact sports and are riddled with injuries. Minor and even more severe injuries that can end the careers of players.…

An individual can be active in sports one or all of the following three different ways; they can be a participant, an in-person spectator, and/or a viewer on television or radio. According to the 2015 Participation Report by the Physical Activity Council (2015), of the 292 million Americans that are age six and older, 209 million are active participants in some type of sports activity. In a 2008 report, Humphreys and Ruseski reported that 277 million tickets were sold to fans who attended games at one of 26 major U.S. sports in 2005 (p.13). They also cite the National Sporting Goods Association report on television viewership. According to the report the top three sports watched by American audiences are the National Football League (105,874,000 viewers), Major League Baseball (76,744,000 viewers), and National Basketball Association (60,877,000 viewers) (p.17). All of these numbers tell us that sports have a huge impact on the way Americans spend their time and money. This is important to acknowledge because it shows the influence that sports have on our society physiologically, psychologically, and…

Sports are cultural practices that differ from place to place and time to time. How they are defined, organized, and integrated into social life varies from group to group. To understand sports we must view them as social phenomena (Coakley & Donnelly, 2004). Viewing sports as a social phenomena means that one must realize that are many topics to be questioned and viewed upon with an open mind.…

Baseball as a sport is considered to be America's pastime. Nothing beats sitting at your favorite ballpark, with a hot dog smothered with ketchup and mustard in one hand and an ice cold beer in the other hand. This scene is symbolic to the American culture. Baseball has seen its fair share of changes, from the dead ball era, to the expansion era, where we see different races from around the world coming to america to play this great game we know as baseball. Baseball has always been popular in the united states and always will be. The game has been around for 172 years and is just as popular now than it was when it was first introduced in 1839. People argue today that American football, not soccer, is now becoming more of the “American” sport than baseball. Baseball represents more of what america is, does not have a sole purpose of a means for a social gathering of people, and has more integrity than the game of football.…

Whether it is Baseball or Football we all have different views on witch one is America favorite pass time. There are several categories that can be considered when determining America's number one pastime. Analyzing attendance, ticket costs, revenue from television, salaries, venues, will help to present a case for which sport is number one in the United States. Here is one factors will help determine which sport is more beloved by Americans. The one factor is Attendance, “One way to determine whether baseball or football is more popular in America is by looking at how many people go to the games. During the year 2000, the average crowd at a baseball game was 30,125, while the average crowd at a football game was 66,077. This figure is based on a total yearly attendance, divided by the total number of games that were played in the sport. Simply based upon this one factor, it would appear that twice as many people went…

    Sport Fans

Although many people like sports and watch them on television, few people actually have a strong pride in a team, or really care about how a team does on a competitive game to game basis. To me people can be categorized in three different fan groups. One type of fan is a fair weather fan. They jump from team to team, most likely to which one is winning. Another type of fan is a part-time fan. They really do not care much about any one team, and just watch whoever is on. Finally, there is what I like to call die-hard fans. These fans never miss a game, and route for their team in good and bad times. The first type of fan that I mentioned is a fair weather fan. These are the kinds of fans that never really jump on board with one specific team. They cheer for whichever team might be winning at the time. These fans will usually say that they are routing for whoever the sports critics say will win the championship in that specific season. The next type of fan is what I like to call a part-time fan. These fans really do not have a favorite team, or even like sports period. They will watch a game only if there is nothing else on that they would rather watch. They really do not care who wins or loses. Most of the time these fans do not really know much about the sport that they are watching, or know much about sports in general. The final type of fan that I mentioned is a die-hard fan. These are the fans that truly have a favorite team, and really care about how their team does throughout the season. You will never hear a die-hard fan cheer for any team other than his or her favorite. Die-hard fans are the ones who are tailgating at the games at eight o’clock in the morning, when the game does not start until five or six o’clock at night. They will be the ones that you will see on television with their chests painted in weather that you cannot even imagine being outside in, much less with your shirt off. They truly feed off how their team does throughout the season, if the…

The sport industry is nothing less than the pastime of America. Millions of viewers tuned in everyday to receive updates and news on their favorite sports team or even players. Nationwide networks and even local sporting stations broadcast anything from the more popular sports such as football, baseball, and basketball, to the less familiar and far less attractive sports such as volleyball, rugby and even lacrosse. From there, you then see the differences of gender roles and the popularity issues within each and every sport. Gender…

For example it can make you a happy and social person. Lots of people love watching sports, even if it's not their favorite team. Sixty seven point two people watched the 2012 presidential debate. One hundred and eleven point two watched the 2014 Super Bowl. This shows how many people watch sports. People who love sports are usually less lonely, and being a fan gives you a sense of belonging.
