The basic anatomy of bones. Bones are made up of many layers. The first layer is called periosteum this is the surface layer. It is a layer membrane which helps the blood vessels. The next layer of the bone in compact bone this is the hardest part of the bone it is also very smooth. Inside the compact bone there is a medullary cavity this stores the red and yellow bone marrow. The next layer is cancellous bone it is also known as spongy bone. It helps give the bone more strength so it’s more difficult to break. Between the cancellous bone there is epiphyseal wire which is also known as a growth plate.
