Although Ichabod Crane and Brome Bones show similar interests (i.e. Katrina) they are vastly different characters, both in design and portrayal. Ichabod is introduced as a ‘tall, but exceedingly lank’ person with ‘narrow shoulders.’ Irving goes even as far as to compare Ichabod to an ‘escaped scarecrow’. Brom Bones, on the other hand is not only described, but introduced as a ‘burly, roaring young man’. But there’s more to these characters despite their appearances. A hero is a very popular title for those who rescue or save others so to speak. What most people do not know is that there is a way to determine whether characters are true heroes or not and that is through “A Guide to Joseph Cambell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces” (Vogler). Christopher Vogler lays out twelve stages of a hero’s journey, which, if a hero completes them all, then he/she successfully fulfills the archetype and in this instance, Theseus from “Theseus” and Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” do. In order to classify a story as a fairy tale, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the story must be a tale containing actual fairies, an imaginable artificial story, or an absolute dishonest story. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are not novels about fairies or are completely false stories, but they do contain imaginable artificial plots in which a young girl named Alice travels to different worlds in her dreams. Through the creative adventure of these dream stories, one could vaguely qualify them as a fairy tale.
