Lord Sugar’s idiolect stands out in this transcript because it’s completely different to the candidates. His language features are very informal which is surprising considering they are in a boardroom and you would expect everyone to be professional, especially Lord Sugar, as he is the boss.

Alan’s informality is shown with his cockney accent and the fact he uses elision and slang in his dialect, such as “dunno”, “talkin” and “should’a”. This shows that is so assured with his position of power and authority over the contestants that he doesn’t have to use upwards convergence to bring him closer to the contestants by changing his idiolect and giving people a more highly regarded perception of himself because peoples opinion on someone who has Alan’s idiolect would be that they are not very well educated and would have had a poor upbringing with not much money. The fact that he is so comfortable is reflected in the way is sits back, casually in his chair.

On the other hand, all the contestants have a formal idiolect; they have a ‘posh’ accent and use Queens English, such as “Indeed”, “Absolutely” and “If I may”. This language is used to give across a good impression of them but they could also be using upwards convergence to put their idiolect on par with the other contestants so they are not seen as less intellectual, because the view on people with their idiolect is that they are well educated and have been well brought up in a wealthy environment. The fact the candidates are trying to make a good impression instantly shows they are in a less powerful position because they have something to prove.

The candidates use repeated phrases and constantly call Alan “Lord Sugar” throughout the conversation, however they are known just by their first names, “Tom”, “Zoe” and “Melody”. This instantly puts Lord Sugar above them and shows us that he is much more powerful position. The public view of someone called Lord means that they are is a highly

Jamie Oliver’s style of speech is very different to many of his contemporaries: he uses his distinctive style to present himself as a down to earth, friendly TV chef. Oliver is the only person talking in his transcripts because he is cooking and explaining his actions for the TV show. The fact that he is cooking while talking means that there are numerous pauses and fillers in the transcript, for example “you wanna coat the bottom ... of the pan.” The pause indicates that he is demonstrating this action on the programme; it is important in his role as a TV chef that he doesn’t just sit and talk through a recipe because viewers want to see the recipes being made and they also want to be entertained and kept interested by Oliver moving around in the kitchen. Other pauses suggest that, although this programme is scripted to a small degree, Oliver is not reading from a script but retains an element of spontaneity to his speech. The fillers at the start of the transcript, I got a pan, er the right size pan about, sort of seven inches, are indicators of this spontaneity, as is the non-fluent er. Although sometimes a sign of nervousness, in this case I think the fillers which act like pauses help Oliver to appear normal, like his viewers, so they are more likely to attempt his recipes and, of course, buy his books. However constant fillers may disrupt the fluency of the show and may act as a degrading point towards the audience. Comparing this to Nigella Lawson, a much Elder audience may find her style of presenting much more useful and understanding as she…

Their word choice and the way they talk matches up with their lifestyle that is shown in the film. It is vastly different from tone in the middle of the documentary as it carries a greater weight than it does during that part the film. Slang is also often used by the characters and further reinforces the fact that they live in poverty and have had a rugged upbringing. Diction interacts with the other appeals and styles to help the film be put together like a puzzle, each piece fitting together to create a bigger…

An exclusive nature is also highlighted by the language used during the exchange between Peter and Cuddeford, with Cuddeford’s analogy of “bowling averages” showing that he expects knowledge of cricket to be held by those he is speaking to. Furthermore, the male workers all appear to have nicknames for each other, referring to one barrister as “Beaky” and an old judge as “Chugger”. This may suggest that the barristers are all from public schools such as Eton, and their schoolboy nicknames have stuck with them throughout their adult life.…

    lord sugar

Lord Sugar is obviously in control of the entire boardroom, he shows this through his choice of spoken language and body language; by saying “can I clarify one thing”. This reminds the candidates of Lord Sugar’s powerful position and where the future employee will stand with him; this also provides a challenge to the eager entrepreneurs which they will enjoy. By him saying this, Lord Sugar is reasserting his authority and dominating the whole room. Lord Sugar appears as a dictator because he sets all the boundaries of the tasks, the timing, the teams, the rewards and humiliating the team that fails to win the task. By humiliating them, it makes them look like puppets in his game, as it is his TV show. However he is not completely in control as it seems, he doesn’t attend the tasks and he also gets assistance from colleagues in interview week and most of the editing is done by actual editors not himself. Lord Sugar also uses long utterances, showing his control over the candidates, as Lord Sugar is the one who is the least interrupted, also indicating that the contestants respect him. The word “clarify” to make clearer or to understand; he uses this as a word that will give him power and control over the contestants. Again this undermines them as Lord Sugar is showing them up by having to explain things to the candidates. By using “can” it suggests that Lord Sugar is trying to be softer on the candidates by suggesting that he knows what his role is, putting them back in their place doing so in firm…
