FINAL LEAP: SPM 1119 MODULE 2010

The FINAL LEAP: SPM 1119 MODULE 2010 is produced with the intention of providing some assistance to English Language teachers in Kedah in preparing their students for the SPM English Language Examination 2010. It grew out of the concern over the unsatisfactory performance in the subject. It aims to provide focused and selected exercises which are accompanied by sample answers and useful notes as well as examination tips. This module consists of four components namely Reading Comprehension and Summary, Literature Component (Novel), Directed Writing and Continuous Writing. These components are deliberately chosen as they carry high weightage in the examination. Each component has a number of thoughtfully selected questions. Based on their teaching and marking experiences, the panel of module developers show, explain and guide how each question should be answered. Practical and handy examination tips are also offered together with sample answers that should allow the average and weak students to score at least the minimum marks in the SPM 1119 Examination. It is the ultimate hope of the Academic Sector (Language Unit), Kedah Education Department that English Language teachers make full use of the practices in this module. Each note and examination tip should be highlighted and reinforced among the students. The Department is confident that the preparation of this module will at least lend a hand to many English Language teachers through its valuable and enriching practices. Last but not the least, the Academic Sector (Language Unit) would like to acknowledge and appreciate the immense efforts of the panel of module developers who had come up with this production. The appreciation also goes to the Assistant District Education Officers (English Language) for their contribution in preparing this module. Comments and feedbacks on this module are truly welcomed.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Context Nowadays, in University, scholars need to learn another language besides their own mother tongue. They will like to learn English language which is the second language we can learn. As a language, there are a lot of skills which we must learn, such as, reading, writing, listening and speaking. What actually reading is? Reading means the action or skill of reading written or printed matter silently or aloud. Moreover, it is also mean as the process of constructing meaning from written texts. Hence, it is not a skill that students must learn separately from other processes. Reading skill combines many complex activities include categorizing, building key terms and concepts for a subject, measuring one’s reaction to a subject, making new connections, abstracting, figuring out significance and developing arguments. In learning English Foundation subjects, there are some reasons for us to read. By reading books, we might become an interesting person. When I entered the University of the West Indies, I thought I was at the summit of English Language, the summit of writing, the summit of analysis, but I was in for a rude awakening when I entered my first class for Writing in the Disciplines, FD14A. The foundation course Writing in the Disciplines on a yearly basis intends to shape the students of the West Indies into an ideal UWI graduate that is, being a critical and creative thinker, being a better analyst, a problem solver, team player etc. This course is very organized, because initially it outlines and explains each week’s activities so prior preparation can be done, as well as giving the students an idea of what to expect. Although it came with challenges like any other courses, it has greatly improved my analytical and critical reading skills as well as my writing. FD14A has shone light upon many students and even though we students may gripe and cry that it is tedious and time consuming, I strongly believe that this course is needed in every way possible to not only improve us as better writers, but also for us not to think we have reached the top.…

    Writing Problems

As English has been likely the most popular medium of instruction for many courses at higher education institutions, learning English will enable students to meet essential requirements in their academic subjects and perform well in the professional contexts (Adams & Keene, 2000). In these circumstances, the students are often demanded to submit some specific writing assignments like article reviews, proposals, projects or research reports. However, they are likely to face a number of writing problems in vocabulary, organization of ideas, grammar and referencing. The main causes of these issues may arise from internal English fundamentals (poor vocabulary, lack of knowledge and motivation), environmental reasons (the frequent use of native language, limited opportunities to practice English) and English teaching techniques (lack of writing practices; unskilled and inexperienced English teachers). In response to these writing problems, as pointed out by Russell (1991) and Ober (1992), it is recommended that several teaching practices, such as using fun mini-games to inspire students in learning English, reading academic-specific materials extensively and assigning additional volumes of writing tasks in discipline-specific courses, should be applied to strengthen students’ writing skills. In addition to teachers' efforts, the students are required to spend more time enriching their vocabulary and grammar as well as reading different sources of English academic writing.…
