I attended Western Kentucky University for one and a half years, following graduation from Allen County Scottsville High School, while there I attended the ROTC program. I learned so much about Army tactics and how to lead men and women through most situations. I was approached about the SMP (Simultaneous Membership Program) contract by a very motivated and charismatic recruiter named SGT Bradley while going through the ROTC program. I was very much interested in becoming an officer for the Army at that time.…

My initial interest in the Air Force Academy was sparked when I accompanied my parents to a Military Child Education Coalition conference in the summer of 2004. My father and I, not involved in the conference, decided to spend the week exploring the Colorado Springs area, and after touring for several days, decided to go to what my father called "Zoomie U". We took the typical summer tourist tour, but I was enthralled. The chapel, the mountains, and the campus excited me, despite my youth. I spent the rest of the vacation asking questions on how to go to the Academy, what I could do in the Air Force, and a slew of other inquiries. Years later, as a high school junior, I visited again, and made firm my earlier decision: I must apply. Since I first entertained the idea of going to the Air Force Academy, I have considered several fields, namely; pilot, navigator, air battle manager, intelligence, and even technical fields such as meteorology and engineering. There honestly is no particular field which calls me; any career in the Air Force is worth having. The education received from a top-rate school such as the Air Force Academy would assist in all of the above aspirations, from the social networking achieved from the Academy cadets to the loyalty forged in enduring the same system. Also, from what I have learned from Academy alumni, I will value most the combination of education, military training, sports, and sleep. The lesson of time management is taught to ensure that all Air Force officers know its importance in the military, and there is no better classroom for that lesson than a military academy.…

JROTC brings out the best in me and my fellow cadets because of the high level of maturity expected of them from the instructors and the huge student participation in running the program. The program also prepares us for life after high school, helping us to learn our personality types and how to interact with other types. We also learned to respect ourselves and others when wearing uniform and when we are not. We learn to step outside our comfort zone and become acquainted with the world around us; the…

Before this course, my conception of the roles military officers in society and government had was that they were distinct individuals of a higher moral and ethical caliber. With these values came a voluntary but clear support of their chain of command and mission to defend the citizens of the United States of America. Prior to attending West Point, I observed an awkward separation between members of the armed forced and civilians due to lack of knowledge and familiarity of both worlds. Therefore, while I was aware that…

The focal point of my paper will be on the changes in the United States (US) armed forces over the last century. I chose to compare the Buffalo Soldiers, who existed from 1867-1896, and their experiences with the current state of the US armed forces. I was drawn to author, ZZ Packer’s “Buffalo Soldiers” because of my experience in the US armed services and, as I read the book it became clear that the US armed services today is very different from what it was at the time when the Buffalo Soldiers existed. I served honorably in both the United States Air Force and United States Army from 1985-2001, and my experiences are in stark contrast to the experiences of the Buffalo Soldiers.…

JROTC is unique because it uses a clear chain of command that consists of the students themselves. The fact that the organization is cadet-run is great because it gives us the independence to make decisions that impact us directly and we are free to make the organization our own. Personally, I gained more confidence, better people skills, and personality. JROTC brings out the best in cadets because of the high level of maturity expected of them from the instructors and the huge student involvement in running the program. The program also prepares us for life after high school, helping us to learn our personality types and how to interact with other types. We learn to step outside our comfort zone and become acquainted with the world around us; the world we are to survive in after graduation.…

If I had to choose a service today, I would strive be an Infantry Officer. An Infantry Officer is responsible for leading the infantry and combined forces during land combat around the world. There duties include “commanding and controlling the infantry and combined armed companies and company size unites of 200-300 soldiers; developing doctrine, organizations and equipment for unique infantry missions; instructing infantry skills at service schools and combat training centers; [and] severing as an Infantry advisor.” An Infantry Officer must also embody the following skills: “self-discipline, confidence and intelligence; [the] physically and mentally fit to perform under pressure; [the] ability to make quick decisions; [and being] capable of bearing numerous responsibilities.” I believe my past experiences and current knowledge best fit the characteristics of an Infantry Officer rather than any other service.…

The first advantage of adopting a university system of educating and training army officers would be the alignment of the education programs for different classes of officers in the military, including commissioned officer, warrant officer, noncommissioned officer, as well as education programs for civilian officers in the military (Kilner, 2002). All these officers’ training and education would be accommodated in a single academic structure and calendar, thus helping in streamlining military education and…
