Mrs. Davies’ Class

Hola, la señora Davies’ clase, espero que estés listo para Halloween!(Hello, Mrs. Davies’ Class, hope you are ready for Halloween!) Tuesday is going to be a busy day for you guys with your Halloween party and parade. Do you know what else is celebrated on Tuesday along with Halloween… Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Dia de los Muertos is a time of celebration and remembrance of loved ones who have passed away. It starts on Tuesday October 31st and ends Thursday November 2nd. It is celebrated throughout Mexico. I hear a new Disney movie is coming out called Coco that will show tell us about Dia de los Muertos. I’m excited to see it! How was your first week of learning about pumpkins? I love the smell of pumpkins, but do not like eating anything that has a pumpkin flavor. Yuck! When I think of pumpkins I think of Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin. My class will be having a pizza/popcorn party and watching Charlie Brown because it Halloween and they help deliver coffee to teachers on Fridays. Has anyone carve a pumpkin yet? The Fall Festival is right round the corner. I’m bummed that I can’t go to the festival. I have a wedding that I am in (I’m the Maid of Honor) and I think the bride would be mad at me if I didn’t go to her wedding. You guys will have fun and I will have to hear all about it.

I have! Do you guys remember that my family loves baseball and my brother played it in high school and college. I know Cash it’s no football, but some of the games are some nail bitters. I want the Houston Astros to win because their second baseman is a couple inches taller than me. Some of you 1st graders are as tall as me and can you imagine playing second base in the World Series! José Altuve is the one of the shortest player to ever play in MLB. José Altuve is about 5’5’’. He might even be shorter than Mrs. Davies. I guess we will find out who will win the World Series this

As every kid is exited to go Teak or treating for Halloween, I am excited for El Dia de los muertos (The day of the dead). This holiday is celebrated on November 1. Dia de los muertos is originally from Mexico. In the article Dia de los muertos by National geographic says “Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism, brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores. (Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, minor holidays in the Catholic calendar. Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness)” we celebrate dia de los mueros by bringing food and drinks parties and cool activities…

Dr. Christina Bueno gave an informative and interesting speech on the history on archeology in Mexico. Other than taking a history of Latin America, I have not studied much of the ancient cultures in Mexico, but I was very interested in the material Dr. Bueno went over. In her speech, she goes over only three of the ten-thousand archeological sites in Mexico. My favorite one she went over was on the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. I was fascinated how the city was organized and just how enormous it was.…

Dia de los Muertos, or colloquially, Day of the Dead, is a celebration of those departed into the afterlife. It is the holiday in which Mexico is most famous for (Brandes 1997: 270). In the modern day, this holiday refers to the pan-Roman Catholic holiday All Souls Day, which has its origins in Europe. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is the largest annual ceremony, and rivals it’s ancestral origins (Brandes 1997: 271). In North America, Dia de los Muertos, or Halloween, has become less about celebrating the dead, instead celebrates the chance for persons young and old to dress up, and go door to door begging for candy. This variation, while still having originated from Mexico and the Dia de los Muertos celebrations…

Rodriguez’s speech means that intellect is not simply defined by going to school and getting conventionally good grades, but by the pursuit of knowledge. He means that education does not end after high school or even college, our minds should constantly be feeding and learning new things so we can continue to grow. Learning is messy, learning contains mistakes, it may look like a series of failures but if you persist you can achieve great things. Learning even looks different on everyone and that is not strange. We can become so focused on just getting by with good grades in school we can forget what an amazing opportunity we have, and when we can access to each other’s minds the possibilities are endless.…

Every November 1st the day after Halloween, the Latino community celebrates the Day of the Dead. This year was my first time going to one, which was located in the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen, IL. When we first started to walk up to the building there was already a long line outside of the doors, all the way past the playgrounds and down the street. I went with my cousins and my sister to the festival. We decided not to wait in line and went to the others exhibits they were showing in the baseball fields, where they were showing their ofrendas. Ofrendas are a collection of objects placed on a ritual altar during the tradition of the Latino Dia de los Muertos celebration. They also had a mariachi playing in the background as…

Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1 in Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala and other parts of Central and South America. Families gather to pray to the souls of dead relatives, asking them to return for just one night. People decorate altars in their homes and gravesites with food, candles, candy skulls and marigolds to welcome the souls back to earth. Skeletons are displayed throughout cities, and people dressed as skeletons parade through the streets. Pan de los muertos (bread of the dead) is baked in the shape of skulls and crossbones, and a toy is hidden inside each loaf. The person who bites into the toy is said to have good luck. Day of the Dead sounds like a grim event, but it’s a time to celebrate and remember the lives of dead family…
