Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
While natural talent is a desired trait, it is only through dedication and hard work that we can achieve our full potential--talent or no talent. Prince Nelson, Stevie Wonder and Michaela DePrince are invitees that embody these virtues precisely. Though all my guest can be viewed as prodigal figures, it is their work ethic that makes them legendary and inspirational figures to me. They persevered through unfavorable circumstances and achieved every goal they set forth for themselves. And now, I would like to introduce my first guest: Prince Roger Nelson.
Prince was an iconic singer/songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, actor and director who was a dedicated and hardworking musician. Deserving of the title …show more content…
Stevie Wonder is a musical prodigy who worked hard to influence social issues with his music. Born prematurely and blind, Stevie Wonder mastered the piano, drums and harmonica by age nine. Driven by his love of music, he persevered through his handicapped and self-promoted himself through by submitting his demo tapes to various talent shows. At age eleven he was signed to Motown Records and on his first music tour across America at twelve, being labeled as “The 12-Year-Old Genius”. As he settled into adulthood, Stevie started to incorporate political and social issues into his music. To show his support of making Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a holiday, Stevie released the song “Happy Birthday” in 1980 as a celebratory declaration to Dr. King. Stevie also partnered with musical artists Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, and Michael Jackson in 1985 to raise awareness and funds for humanitarian work in Africa, by releasing their song “We are the World”. In the same year Stevie advocated for racial harmony through the production of his song “Ebony and Ivory”, which featured former Beatles member Paul McCarthy. In 1988 Stevie again yielded his talents to raise funding for AIDS charities, collaborating with musical talents Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Elton John for the song “That’s What Friends Are For”.     According to Steve Huey, “Wonder was born Steveland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, MI, on May 13, 1950” (np). As a premature infant, he was put in an incubator, with an excess of oxygen that resulted in a visual condition known as retinopathy, causing blindness (Huey np). Steve Huey said that, “He learned piano, drums, and harmonica all by the age of nine” (np).     There is no questioning Nat King Cole’s place as one of the most influential and important American popular musicians in history. Although he was initially known as an innovative and skilled jazz pianist, his singing allowed him to become highly successful in the realm of popular music, more specifically in the big band and jazz genres. Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama on March 17, 1919 (Ruhlmann par. 3). His family moved to Chicago in 1921, where he began to play the piano at age four and took classical lessons at age 12 (Ruhlmann par. 4). When he was 15, Cole dropped out of high school in order to pursue a career as a jazz pianist (Ruhlmann par. 4). In 1937, Cole formed the King Cole Trio and began doing live performances and occasional recordings for small labels as well as some radio work. After releasing successful singles such as “That Ain’t Right” and “All for You,” the King Cole Trio was signed by Capitol Records in 1942 (Teachout par. 15). Cole began to utilize his voice increasingly, and critics began to notice the King Cole Trio’s increasing tendency to emphasize popular music as early as 1945 (Teachout par. 20). In 1951, Cole officially disbanded the King Cole Trio and continued his successful career as more of a standup singer than as a pianist (Teachout par. 25).
