Speech About School Shootings
At approximately 11:36 today we became aware of a situation where a student made an inappropriate comment about a school shooting. We immediately interviewed the students involved. The student admitted to making an inappropriate comment regarding shooting up the school, but emphasized it was only a joke and never meant any harm. The school has taken appropriate steps in dealing with the situation and wanted to make you aware. I want to reassure parents that we take any threat very seriously, and will always do everything possible to keep our students and our school safe, as it is at this moment. Please discuss these situations with your youth and inform them that in today's society, we simply cannot make jokes about violence in any way.

This took place at Taft Union High School near Bakersfield, California. This school shooting started because the student was a victim of bullying and he wanted revenge. The student came to school and shot one student and missed another. He called the student who was bullying him, and the came out of hiding and apologized, but the teacher, Ryan Heber, interrupted and he came face to face with the 16- year-old student, who was armed. Heber wasn’t sure with this if the student was either, going to put the weapon down or continue shooting. While the student was distracted, Supervisor Kim Fields took the rest of the students so they could escape. Finally, the shooter surrendered and the police took the student into custody. Friday, the next day, school was cancelled due to the situation, but counseling sessions were held that morning for teachers or students who wished to attend. Before Heber spoke to the shooter, the student who was shot in the process was in a critical, yet a stable condition. Kern County Sheriff, Donny Youngblood said “The name of the student wasn’t released, and is debating whether he will be charged as an adult or not.” KDET reported “Heber is a well-known and liked science teacher and was a graduate at Taft and with the situation the Heber family will be there for him with emotional support.” The Taft shooting was the latest school shooting in the U.S., and it launched a big debate whether teachers should carry weapons to protect themselves and others in case of another shooting. Immediately after the shooting, parents went to the school to pick up their children and express concern about the school security. A parent reported “We’re going to protect our students a lot more, and it goes to show that there is one bad apple out there.”…

It was Tuesday, April 20, 1999. It was an exciting day for me in the fourth grade when I turned 9 years old. However, the people of Littleton, Colorado remember that day as something more and definitely less exciting than my birthday was. On April 20, 1999 Littleton Colorado experienced what we now know as the Columbine Massacre. Two seniors at Columbine High School, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold completed this act killing 12 students, 1 teacher, and injured 21 others before committing suicide. Why would anyone want to commit such a horrific crime? Today I am going to talk to you about the boys and their preparations, the massacre itself, and the aftermath.…

In the eyes of news media, whenever a travesty such as a school shooting occurs all other forms of news cease to exist. News stations spend days reporting on the same exact story regardless of any updates. Every time a school shooting occurs the media attempts to establish that the shooter is psychologically ill. Media outlets bend the truth, exaggerate quantitative data, and appeal to unqualified “experts” for information. The utilization of these tools is meant to convince the viewer that the shooter is an outcast of society. The media typically portrays school shooters and other terrorists as socially incompetent, autistic individuals that are psychologically incapable of emotions. This is meant to differentiate a school shooter from what society deems to be normal person; this differentiation is to reassure the public that any normal member of society would not even…

The issue of policing schools has been widely debated across the country. As a high school student myself, I believe policing schools would be extremely beneficial and would enhance the safety of schools everywhere. The article “Does America Really Need More Cops in Schools?” by Susan Ferriss states, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun," National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said after a young man shot his way into his former grammar school on December 14 in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 first-graders and 6 educators.” The recent attacks on schools has raised many red flags concerning the safety of students. With this being noted, it is time school officials took action in effort of halting these vicious attacks.…

Columbine High School, is home to students who dare to reach the beyond and succeed. However, behind the walls of Columbine High School something far more alarming was occurring. Two students caused Columbine High School to become known for something that was way beyond the understanding of Americans across the Nation. Columbine High School would be the home of the worst high school shooting in U.S history. The “Columbine Massacre” could have been restrained if the students, parents and school had taken reasonability in becoming more actively engaged in each students life both in the classroom and outside the classroom.…

Although historically violence has always seemingly plagued education systems and their schools, the last 20 years has marked the emergence of a new form of violence occurring within these institutions, one which is far more deadly and cruel. The act of an individual or multiple individuals executing what is known as a rampage school shooting dates back to as early as the mid-1970s, but truly became a recognized phenomenon in the mid-1990s due to several unprecedented and shocking occurrences of these attacks (Rocque, 2012; Muschert, 2007; Wike & Fraser, 2009).…

I want to know why are there racists in this world. I especially want to know why is it 2016 and we still have race issues going on in this country. Over the past year we have seen many shooting of African Americans. It is statistically proven that African American men are more vulnerable to get treated poorly for the same crime that a white man would do. I’m not saying that the shooting was all because of race. It’s just the fact of black people are racially profiled for no reason. I don’t think it is fair that I have to be at a disadvantage and would be profiled by certain people because of my skin color instead of my…

Every year that passes there is yet another tragic story of how a beloved child has fallen victim to a school shooting. These horror stories many times have no explanation as to why the school shooting has occurred, leaving us in shellshock. Since the columbine shooting on April 20th, 1999 when thirteen people lost their lives, some due to religious belief, there have been thirty-one school shootings. This is a staggering number of shootings that have resulted in a death toll of 162 victims – not including the Oklahoma City bombing. Thompson tell us that the “school system is trying to prevent school shootings but what they are doing is simply not enough. School shootings have become more deadly and the effort of the schools seems to not have any effect.” (Thompson par. 7) In fact, most people have no idea exactly what the school system is doing to try and stop these school shootings. If the people don’t know what is being done, than there is a good chance that the school system is doing very little to nothing at all.…

If someone were to rely solely on television media, it wouldn't surprise me if he/she thought that America's schools were being taken over by these so-called "juvenile super predators." The American people would assume that every quiet kid who gets picked on is going to turn around in school one day and start unloading his newly acquired firearms on his peers. This is hardly the case. While there may be an occasional "super-predator," the media has highly over publicized these rare, extraordinary events.…
