Spca Speech
Meet Nick. Eight and a half years ago, my family adopted Nick from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or the SPCA. Nick is without a doubt the most loving, enthusiastic, friendly dog I have ever come across, and it pains me to know that without the SPCA, animals like Nick would be left without homes, without food, and most upsetting, without love. Through personal experience and research, I have gathered a wealth of information I would like to share with you today about the SPCA. The SPCA has been working for 184 years to prevent animal cruelty, save numerous lives, and bring the joy of owning a pet to people worldwide. Because most people love animals, and because the SPCA is the most recognizable animal organization worldwide, I would like to take this time to inform you about the history of the SPCA, the SPCA’s mission, and about SPCA’s adoption and volunteer process. Most people are unaware that the SPCA began in England in the early 1800’s to prevent the mistreatment of carriage horses, which were forced to work in the heat of August and the biting cold of February, often with little to no food, water, or rest. Because this was before the introduction of automobiles, horse-drawn carriages were the main source of transportation, and a great outlet for making money. When the horses of the greedy carriage drivers were too tired and literally unable to pull the carriage, they would be beaten. So in 1824 the first SPCA was created. With the original goal of passing laws that would regulate the treatment of carriage horses, the SPCA soon grew to the organization we are all familiar with, which included dogs, cats, and a wide range of other animals. 42 years later, the ASPCA, or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was founded in New York. Since the start of the ASPCA in 1866, approximately 5,000 animal shelters have found their way into America. As stated in its name, the SPCA’s primary goal is to prevent animal
