The video “The True Costs Of Growing Soy in Southern America”, and this week’s reading “A Land in Flames”, show the damage on local communities and land from growing soy. In South America, forests are destroyed and people are relocated in order to make farms to grow soy that is then sent to Europe to feed animals. The video shows an indigenous community in Paraguay being interviewed, and to them deforestation is nothing but an invasion that takes away their necessities. In just Paraguay, almost three thousand square feet are used to grow soy. Which leaves multiple communities without the recourses they need; instead of being surrounded by the animals and crops they relied on to survive, they are left surrounded by soybean farms.…

Monsanto was created in 1901. The company focused primarily on basic industrial chemicals and during the 1940’s became the leading manufacturers of synthetic fibers and plastics. They continued to be one of the US top ten chemical companies. Following the Second World War, Monsanto championed the use of chemical herbicides in agriculture and created such agrochemical products as DDT, Lasso and Agent Orange, which was widely used as a defoliant by the US government in the Vietnam War until it was shown to be highly carcinogenic. Following the ban of Agent Orange and increasing criticism of Lasso, Monsanto developed a new herbicide, Roundup that became their most profitable product. In response to this they needed to radically transform the company and relaunched itself as an agricultural biotechnology company. The company claimed that their new technology could achieve goals such as ensuring adequate food production, responding to the challenge of global warming and reduce agriculture’s negative impacts on the environment. Monsanto went on to become the dominant player in commercial genetically engineered (GE) crops.…

With the coming to Mindanao of the Spaniards in the 16th century, the Subanon were pushed farther in to the forests to join their fellowmen who had already settled in it. The Spanish occupation of several places along the coast of Mindanao Island, made the Subanon feel safe in their forest sanctuaries. The Christianized Filipinos who reached Mindanao during the Spanish period and permanently resettled near Spanish garrisons, made it difficult for them to return to the shore. Besides the Spaniards and the Filipinos, the constant attacks by the raiders from Cotabato and Sulu on Christian settlements and Spanish garrisons, added greatly to their fear forcing them to the interior.…
