1. Soul Surfer takes place in Kauai, Hawaii. In the story, the main character-Bethany Hamilton- is an extremely talented surfer. Her whole life basically revolved around surfing, she loved it more than anything else in the world. Bethany spent most of her time in the water, either practicing or competing. Until one day during a practice session with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, something tragic occurred. Bethany was attacked by a 14 foot tiger shark. Alana, and her father and brother rushed Bethany to the hospital, in fear that she might die. Ironically, Bethany’s father was getting surgery that day, and he left his room so that his daughter could be helped. It was her and her family’s faith in God that had kept her alive. Bethany woke up to realize that she had lost her left arm, and her dream of becoming a professional surfer. For this, Bethany looked for guidance through God. She took a trip to Thailand with her church youth group through World Vision in efforts to help the tsunami victims. There, Bethany was touched by God, and her perspective on the injury, and her whole life, was changed. A young orphan, traumatized by the tsunami, refused to go in the ocean. Bethany helped him get the courage to go back in the water. This boy helped her realize that surfing isn’t the most important thing in the world. Bethany believed that God did everything for a reason, and that this injury was for the better. Her father restated an inspiring verse from the Bible, “You can do all things through ‘Him’ who gives you strength” Philippians 4:13. And Bethany succeeded to compete in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships, and took 1st place.…

“A lot of people think of soul surfers as people who just surf to compete. But I think it’s someone who just loves surfing for what it is, never gives up and always sticks with the ocean.” (Turner 1) Bethany Hamilton was a born soul surfer on February 8, 1990, and born on the island of Lihue, Hawaii. Bethany has two older brothers, Noah and Timmy Hamilton. Her parents are both surfers, which is how they met in Hawaii.(“Bethany Hamilton” Gale Database 1) Ever since Bethany was a little kid she’s always wanted to be a Pro Surfer, and her life goal to be one. When the shark attack happened, people thought it would change her perspective on the whole pro surfer “pipe dream”, but instead the attack made her determined to a whole new level. All of the sacrifices, choices, tools that she had to relearn how to do were all important, which made her get even closer to getting on her board. Bethany used all of her new awards, achievements, and wins of surf competitions to inspire people who look up to her as a role model and even people in her same situation. Bethany shows courage in different ways than most people would, which is what makes her stand out.…
In the story, “Touching Bottom” by Kari Strutt, the theme is to not give even when one hits rock bottom. This is demonstrated in the story when, Ian is drowning in the ocean because the current is dragging him down and he is unable to swim due to a cramp development in his leg. Saving Ian is very challenging for the narrator because at one point Ian is struggling to keep his head above water and while doing so he accidently pushes the narrator below, deep in to the ocean and now she is having difficulty breathing and striving to survive. In order to save herself from drowning, the narrator pushes herself further down into the ocean and realizes that the bottom was not actually as far as she had assumed. After she resurfaces, the narrator has to swim with Ian on top of her to get him back to safety all while fighting against a current. At one moment the narrator thought she could not continue and she asks Ian to swim for himself but he is unable to do so. At that moment she feels like she has hit rock bottom because she is not able to swim much longer due to her aching joints and emerging injuries such as; big bleeding welts on her arms and back, and a splintered shoulder. Throughout the course of this life changing experience the narrator has to watch her much older husband flirt with another woman on the beach without caring about their life threatening situation. However, she has a flashback, that motivates her to keep swimming to save her step son and eventually she finds a human willing to lend her his board to help bring Ian back to shore. In conclusion, while struggling to stay alive and rescue Ian, the narrator felt that she had hit rock bottom at the beach and in life but she fought through it all and moved on.…

Voting isn't just for people that are outside of prison. In my opinion I think that everybody has a second chance in life even if they are in prison. They all have rights to vote they are people truing to change their lives. They maybe did something that others dont agree on at all and that they need to be punished and have no rights at all. What if that was you in their you'll say that your doing you're time that you are trying to change and that's what they are doing.…
She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. She floats for a long while, the salinity in the water steadily…

The most persuasive essay that we have read in class at the moment is From “Resistance to Civil Government” by Henry David Thoreau. It explains why the people have the right to resistance, the importance of majority opinion, and go against the government. Thoreau uses strong logical, emotional, and ethical appeals throughout the story to express his reasons for standing against the government.…
Through her story of faith, persistence, and confidence, Bethany Hamilton has illustrated to millions how to strive for the seemingly unachievable. At the mere age of thirteen, Hamilton experienced something life changing: having an arm bitten off by a shark while surfing. Surfing had always meant the world to Bethany, in fact, her career as a surfer was primarily initiated because of her parents (Hamilton 7). From the moment Hamilton reaches the board, an inexplicable connection sparks. Bethany said “I’ve tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body (Hamilton 119) .” Although at times there were downsides, being the youngest of three and the only girl had its benefits. She always engaged in similar activities and the outcome was that she learned to be very ambitious and was always driven to be the…
