There are many aspects of health care that intrigue me. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse; unfortunately it is very difficult to get into the program. However, if I ever go back to do that, I would want to either do labor and delivery or pediatrics. I have had the privilege of witnessing the birth of one of my nieces and it was the most amazing experience. To be a nurse and being a part of that on a daily basis would be awesome. I also have an extra soft spot for children, which is why pediatrics would also be of interest to me. Life threatening diseases do not only affect adults. I feel that being able to help children would only be helping our future.…

When I was four years old I was asked, "Katie, what do you want to do when you grow up?” To my family's surprise my response was "Work on hearts or brains". This aspiration has never wavered, and has only become more a part of who I am today through first hand experiences and opportunities I have had in the medical field. I have been fortunate enough to see surgeries first hand, work next to medical professionals, and get an idea of what different occupations bring to the table in the field of medicine.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. But, being a curious individual, growing up I became fascinated toward other career paths in my childhood as well. For example, I wanted to become a pilot when I was in second grade, and wanted to become a professional volleyball player when I was in fifth grade. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…

My aunt was the mother figure to her ten younger siblings after their mother's passing. I remember listening to my relatives as they were mourning and overheard that her life could have been saved if her symptoms were diagnosed correctly. At the time, it was unfathomable to me that her death could have been prevented if she was treated early. It was completely heartbreaking at that point in my life. I never stopped wondering about a different outcome if she took the available preventative measures. I then was determined to have a career in the healthcare field. I wanted to be involved to help others make the right decisions concerning their health.…
