Sony Overhaul

Introduction:
This paper will analyze how Sony is struggling to reinvent itself in the market by transforming its corporate culture, cutting costs and introducing new product lines in its ailing electronics division.
Recommendation.
Corporate culture needs to be cohesive and organic: The corporate culture at Sony is bureaucratic and the job for life mentality has created Empire building in departments. Each department or unit looks to gain control over key projects and ignores the company well being as a whole, Sony eventually suffered leading to a loss of $1 billion for the year ending in March. 2009. This culture needs to be changed to be more constructive and the communication within the departments needs to be improved. Cross functional teams across departments and units need to be created to overcome this silo effect in the organization. A corporate culture that values innovation needs to be developed for employees to come up with new product ideas that can give back its competitive edge in the consumer electronics division. The vertical chain of command should not be adhered to and it should be organic promoting horizontal communication to foster ideas within employees.
New Leadership to create buy in from the employees: Sir Howard Stringer who took over as the CEO of sony in 2005 is the only American CEO sony has ever had since its inception, even though he has a team of 4 musketeers in their late 40’s and 50’s helping him in his transformation in addition to a Chief Transformation officer that Sir Howard Stringer hired, the 4 musketeers that Sir Howard Stringer hired were originally overseeing some departments and Stringer broadened their responsibilities. While that is not totally a wrong approach, Stringer might have hired 2 of his transformation people like that and 2 withint he organization who were young superstars, this would create more diversified thinking.     Sony Corporation commonly referred as Sony, is a Japanese multi-national company. It’s Headquarters is in Tokyo, Japan. The company’s main focus is on electronics, games, entertainment and financial service sectors. Sony’s history goes as far back as 1946, as an electronic shop in a departmental store in Tokyo. It was started by Masaru Ibuka and had a total of eight employees. The next year he was joined by his colleague, Akio Morita. They founded a company called Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation. Their first product was a Tape Recorder. In 1958, the company’s name was changed to Sony. In the next 10 years, the company took a huge rise by selling from an estimated 100,000 units to 5 million units. They encouraged the development of Compact Discs by 1980s. In 1985, Sony launched their Handycam products and the Video8 format. In1990s, the company launched their Memory Stick format, flash memory cards for use in Sony lines of digital cameras and portable music players. It has seen little support outside of Sony's own products, with Secure Digital Cards (SD) commanding considerably greater popularity. Sony has made updates to the Memory Stick format with Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Micro. By early 1990s, Playstation was released. This gave them a rise of 61% of global console sales. By the success, Sony released Playstation 2 by early 2000s which was even more successful. The console has become the most successful of all time, selling over 150 million units as of 2011.…

The public previously had the impression that either Kunitake Ando (Idei 's previous nomination) or Ken Kutaragi (Mr. Norio Ohga 's favourite) would take over this position. Though Norio Ohga has given his title in 1999 to Nobuyuki Idei, he stills hold the title of Chairman and interferes with daily operation and influenced directors ' board decision. Ohga was first jealous of Idei 's success when Idei gloating launched the PlayStation severely wounding Nintendo and all but exterminating Sega. However, things took an unexpected turn when Sony business plunged facing fierce competitors such as Apple, Samsung. Idei announced his successor as Sir Howard Stringer. The board has consensus that six other insiders, including Ando (President and COO), Idei (CEO) and Kutaragi (PlayStation mastermind) resigned after Howard takes over the helm and Howard would be given authority to nominate his own people. In March 2005, Nobuyuki Idei named non-Japanese and non-engineer Sir Howard Stringer as the next chairman and CEO of the media giant. Previously responsible for U.S. operations, Stringer has demonstrated his leadership ability, having worked with other Sony executives to slash $700 million a year in U.S. overhead costs. Despite his success in the U.S. market, Stringer has a tough road ahead, as he tries to bring Sony into the era of convergence and open communication - without being able to speak the language himself. Nobuyuki Idei said that "Howard 's job is to communicate better and to symbolize that convergence is for real at Sony". Howard will need to seek consultation from other prominent CEOs such as Carlos Ghosn and Lou Gerstner to fight the battle for the better.…
