Sonny Blues Literary Analysis
Though Sonny in the Story “Sonny Blues” wasn’t able or chose not to get an education. He was smart in one area, and that was expressing himself through playing jazz on the piano. His experience on music and his personal life would make him be able to teach his brother (who was teacher) something about him. Sonny was much like his father, an isolated man who didn’t really like expressing himself verbally, he would do drugs as well but realized that wasn’t really make him express his feelings out. Through his wisdom of music and personal life, Sonny was able to teach his brother that communicating is more than just verbally but through music as well. Sonny was a drug addict in the begging of the story and was arrested because of it. This event would make Sonny change in way, as he realized that drugs weren’t really making him happy and it wasn’t allowing him to express himself as he would have hoped. He would go to the military as well after an argument he had with Isabel’s mom on him not going to school and trying to become a musician. His own brother even throughout the story thought that Sonny wanted to take his own life because he still thought he was a drug addict and throughout the story believe he did drugs because he didn’t want to keep living anymore. The truth, however was that Sonny did drugs as way to express himself as he did when he would play blues on the piano. In this aspect Sonny was able to teach his brother that things weren’t how the society described them or how his own friends say they were. He thought his Brother that everyone had their own problems and showed him that society had a way of changing the stories of drug addicts and musician’s life’s and why they do
