Sonia Sotomayor
The Supreme Court is the highest judicial court in the United States of America. Sonia Sotomayor is the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Sotomayor is the 1st Hispanic justice, 3rd female justice, and the courts 111th justice. She has been a loyal member of the liberal side. Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York, on June 25, 1954. Her parents, who were of Puerto Rican decent had a diminutive income. When Sotomayor was 9 years old, her father died. Her mother worked hard to raise Sotomayor and her brother. Sonia's mother was very stern when it came to education and did anything she could to make her children understand how much power education had on their future. Sotomayor graduated from Princeton University in 1976 and that same year she entered Yale Law School. After Yale Law School she became an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. She then served as an associate and later as a partner at Pavia and Harcourt. Sotomayor was nominated first by George Bush to the United States District Court. During her second circuit, she served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals. On May 26, 2009 president Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor as an associate Justice of the Supreme Court and she took her seat on August 8, 2009. Barack Obama felt that Sotomayor was an inspiring women. Sonia worked at almost every level of the judicial system and President Obama saw that success in her and thought someone with as much experience as her could be a wonderful part of the Supreme Court. Sotomayor’s seat previously belonged to David Souter. On May 1, 2009, Souter sent a letter to President Obama resigning himself from the Supreme Court. Sotomayor is the public face of the liberal wing. To others, Sonia is a “real” person who is open about herself.
