In this song, the lead singer, Anthony Kiedis, is describing how after a drug addiction he moved to a different city to start a new life. This relates to Holden in Catcher in the Rye because after he was kicked out of school he had a hard decision to make. He either could go to his home before his parents knew about the expulsion, or he could run away to New York. Anthony and Holden both choose to go to the city. Also in the song and the book, the singer and Holden turn to drugs as a way to help their lives. Obviously that is the wrong choice, but anyways Holden, although underage, drinks as a means of an anti-depressant. “…The more depressed I got, and I decided, while I was walking and all, to stop off and have a drink somewhere” (90). This quote shows just one of a couple instances where Holden wants to drink because he is depressed or lonely. Anthony Kiedis, just like Holden, turned to hard drugs because he felt lonely from his family and friends.…

The title of the book refers to “the small rains that come, in February and March... to make the mangoes sweet” (p. 78). Kris Holloway described them as “the brief rains that came when I least expected them” (p. 78). Monique and the Mango Rains is a story of the friendship that develops over time in between a local health care worker in the village of Nampossela, Mali and the author, Kris Holloway. Holloway is on a two-year assignment (1989 to 1991) with the Peace Corp. The book shows how the villagers eat, farm, socialize and celebrate but one of the most important themes of the book is health care and how it affects the lives of the women in the village.…

Proper screenplay structure is understood by few would-be screenwriters. Three act structure is integral to your screenwriting success. Virtually every successful movie uses the three act structure. If you are interested in writing a three act screenplay there is an easy formula to make that happen and there is still an infinite range of possibilities within the three act structure.…

Kelly Gallagher states very clearly the dirty little secret of schools in America in chapter 1 of his 2011 book, Write Like This. He declares, “In other words, seven out of ten students are leaving schools without the necessary skills to actively participate in either civic life or in the global economy” (Wiens). These startling statistics should disturb you, and, if nothing is done, there’s only room for future generations’ stats to get worse. If you’re a parent put in the position of telling your teenager exactly why they should spend a whole thirteen years of their life getting an education when they’ve already learned, how to read, write, and do simple math, basic skills, and they throw this statistic at you, what do you do? My father…

“High School Low” by Say Anything: Within the first two pages of the novel Runner, Carl Deuker gives us a description of Chance Taylor and his personality. We learn that he has no friends, does not talk in school, and does whatever to just pass. His first year of high school, he is beat up by Brent Miller. From that point on in the story, we get the feeling that Chance just wants to hurry up and finish school. “High School Low” says the same thing in so many ways. One critical lyric in the song that made me choose it for Chance is, “The best years of my life oh my god I hope not lets go”. Another part of the song that perfectly portrays Chance for me is, “Oh, these high school days/Take that away, take me away, take me away/Stress and hard duress replace the hope I had everyday/All these high school days/Take that away, take myself away.” Chance has to deal with the stress of paying the moorage fee, buying food, his dad's alcoholism, and school, all of which leads him to become a runner.…

I didn’t have to, but I did. It was an order, what other choice did I have? I was merely a low level officer; the power was in Hiroto’s hands. She broke the camp rules, outside dealings, but did she? It was medicine to save innocent women, innocent women who have been caught up in a war for power, which has resulted in the women becoming the powerless, and me the powerful. Each day I have to dig deep, keep on digging I tell myself, for reasons to be here; pride, family honour, dignity for my people, remember what father said; Japanese are the ones who made the Europeans rich, yet for hundreds of years the Europeans looked down upon us, now it’s Japan’s turn, still, my moral conscience has clouded my mind to the atrocities that I have seen, a short time ago I was a teacher of a class with half Japanese and half European, and they couldn’t see any differences, they looked to the inside, why can’t these officers look to the inside, morality in children is a quality that is needed now, yet I see the children in the camp being bashed by that brute Tomiashi, I want to help, but Japan is now powerful, Japan must prevail. I passed the fuel to Tanaka, my hand trembling, I wanted to latch onto the bottle, throw it away, throw all this away, is this how far we have come, is the power really worth this? Ablaze, my eyes cloud while I have to control myself not to react, I must be strong in front of these European women, the powerful are not weak, they have oppressed me, although I cannot see it, them crying is the first instance of any reminisce of human emotion since I left my teaching job in the village, I didn’t want to leave the students, but the European students had fled with their families and we had instilled in our minds that the powerful nation would prevail, but is power worth this? I feel the confusion and anguish drop over me like a sheet of cold rain that chills you to your spine, this is wrong, this is wrong, but it’s for the great…

The title of the movie gives the viewer an idea of what the film will be about: redneck inbreds. Harmony Korine wrote and directed Gummo: he made the movie to please himself and then the audience. He claims to be a realist writer/filmmaker when he states “realism, even if fictional, should be the dominant mode in filmmaking” after the screening of Gummo. The directorial style of Korine throughout the movie intended to make the film feel uncomfortable by forcing the viewer to confront the ugliness of the world created and represented in his film. The film is similar to a documentary. Daily events of the people of Xenia are shown and Korine is able to address the themes of poverty, violence, prostitution, homosexuality,…

Tom had always loved plants. He loved the way they would begin their lives as tiny seeds buried in their cosy little nests, and then, with all the essential ingredients a sprinkle of water, a cup of sunlight and a dash of time they would blossom into sharp Italian ballet dancers, their lively radiance beating against the cream-white window pane. Toms mother would grow these plants by the dozen, and, once a month, after harvest week, she would take all the plants away, replacing them with seemingly barren pots of soil, each containing their own hidden seed ready to grow and blossom into another magnificent dancer on the windowsill.…

Black Diamond Night (a coalminer’s cemetery) Where the ebony, we call “NIGHT”, Old black rocks sit under the twilight. Diamond shape eyes unclear and lonely, Sinister through hostile spirits only, I stumble across these stones without a bone. A solitary confinement alone, From a barren zone the light transcend. Only in time, our minds will mend. Endless valleys and limitless stones. These bones- these bones they sit alone. The abyss, of rotten cavities with no fill, A system no power can unwell the drill The blood that passed over without a spill. Peaks collapse into a spellbinding chill. They are trapped! They are trapped! Another diamond in the rough. Is what they left. Obsessed by the dead without a death. Death that impatiently awaited their last breath. Gushing, unto the gems of dead chemistry, Diamonds holding its own intensity, These lonely graves, on top of sycamore hill. Coal mining hearts that will never heal. If only shiny eyes could see? These lonely bones inside of me! Moving in every direction possible Flowing in every direction noticeable. Sockets without eyes. Stones hiding under the cobalt skies. The mad sparkles, the madness dies. Throughout this mass, we held in the blasphemous. Intervening lots of gems so miraculous. Into a stone of self-religion, A black night filled of legions. Acknowledging the souls capacity of free. Near the frail bones that sit alone, Alone they sit in a morbid home. Through a path unclear and all alone, Troubled by the visions of my own stone. Where the night takes place in the dark. The ebony rides under the diamond bark. Along with the coalminers who never got to see the; “Diamonds of another…

“My Greatest Ambition” is about a young Australian boy of thirteen who has a dream of being a comic book artist. This dream is rubbished and scoffed at by everyone whom he knows. He has to keep his desire a secret from his parents as they give little or no support for such frivolous activities. However, the young Lurie follows his ambition and makes his first comic strip and sends it to a dying magazine. Seeing his work the editors of this magazine considers asking young Lurie to work for them as a fulltime employee. Here Morris Lurie highlights the prejudiced and judgmental mind-sets of adults towards the capabilities of the youth. Lurie skillfully uses humor to highlight some important issues in the society. He twists the language and the words to get his point across to the readers in the most entertaining fashion. Lurie uses techniques such as irony, imagery, dialogue, typical teenage exaggerated language and different point of views to make his story most enjoyable.…
