Something Wicked This Way Comes
My collage is based on the characters, events and themes of Something Wicked This Way Comes. The book was written by Ray Bradbury and first published in 1962. From this novel, there has been a movie adaptation. It begins with “First of all, it was October, a rare month for boys.” The setting of this story is in October which explains use of the image of leaves. The lines represent a spider web, this is my interpretation of the book because everything in the story is linked.
Something Wicked This Way Comes has a dark theme, which lead to my use of the black background paper. The blond boy,Will, is one of the main characters. Throughout the book, he is seen with his best friend, Jim. I picked that particular image of the brunette because it

I can determine the author's style in the story ,In November. Cynthia Rylant, likes to use figurtive language in her story. The one that she likes to use the most is personification. An example she used was ,"The tree's spreaded there arms like dancers." This is personification because it is a tree pretending to be a dancer. In fact plants and animals can't do human things. Her style of writing is very funny and she used a lot of figurtive…

Witches’ Sabbath is a nightmarish scene. The composition is flooded with numerous figures, animals and objects. It creates a busy, overwhelming, and almost claustrophobic feeling for the viewer. Its intention is clearly to spark a feeling of anxiety. Though the details of the background are limited, the heavy use of black lends a dark and mysterious tone. Billowing clouds of smoke, a collection of bones and pitchforks, and strange pots in the foreground add to the sense of chaos. The orange and black coloring of the print provides an other-worldly and sinister feel that is absent in the black and white print. It is as if the viewer has entered into a supernatural sort of nightmare.…

In Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, Jim is seen struggling between internal and external conflicts. The text “Jim leaned at it”(Bradbury 101) shows the internal conflict of Jim wanting to be older. Jim does this by leaning towards the carousel while its moving forward, but does not actually get on. Jim wants to become older, but hesitates because he knows his life will change forever. The text “Will, you’ll spoil it! No!”(101) explains that Jim’s internal conflict confuses Jim about what he wants by making him change his mind every so often. Jim does this because he does not understand the difference between right and wrong, and he believes that making himself older will not have any consequences. The text “Jim get off” illustrates…

Life was calm in Greentown, Illinois for Jim and Will, that is, until the carnival came one morning before sunrise. Behind the supposed innocence of the carnival was an evil and darkness that tempted those who felt the most sade. As the boys explored the carnival, and the secrets within, the darkness and temptations began to creep into their own lives. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, uses imagery in the setting to create mystery and suspense as life becomes darker and more dangerous.…

    HOMECOMING- Bruce Dawe

Bruce Dawe effectively uses imagery to create a vividness in the reader's mind. One of the most haunting images is the simile "telegrams tremble like leaves from a wintering tree" and there are so many telegrams being sent to relatives of the fallen soldiers, it is like a wintering tree. In winter, a tree usually loses most its leaves; war kills most soldiers.…

T he colors that are mostly used within the poster are black and blue, which give it a eerie feeling. The film is an animation which follows the dark style of Tim Burton, the main image shown in the background is a full moon. The main characters are shown holding hands on the film poster. Victor Van-Dort,the main character on the left, appears to be in a state of shock at…

Most of the portrait is cast in different shades of brown and black except for the focus areas. The viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to the devilish figure and what looks to be an angel fighting. The devils bright red coloring gives the viewer no choice but to explore the battle ensuing right before their eyes. The mixtures of black and white coloring to create the rolling sky add to the array of color already displayed. Also the parade of angels moving towards the shacks rooftop is an attention grabber. Golden halos decorate every angels head as white robes compliment their melado skin. There are many focus areas in this piece and I believe the artist uses color to direct the viewer’s attention to each of…

In the beginning, the protagonist sees the pattern as a woman trapped in the wallpaper and trying to escape, “The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out,” (652). This metaphor symbolizes the protagonist’s mind beginning to realize that the room may not be the best environment for her. During the middle of the story, the protagonist claims that she sees the woman in the wallpaper creeping, “I see her in those dark grape ' arbors, creeping all around the garden,” (654). This description increases the feeling of unease and concern. As the story continues, the protagonist realizes that she is the woman in the wallpaper, “I kept on creeping just the same” (656). By the end of the story, the protagonist finds herself trapped inside the pattern of the wallpaper, symbolizing her captivity in the room. This yellow wallpaper metaphor occurs several times throughout the story and helps the reader follow the protagonist’s experience of developing…

The image on page twenty-one depicts the scene of the boys’ father and friends driving when an Aboriginal boy jumps put at them in hopes to scare them. The use of dull colours makes the reader focus on the Aboriginal boy who has a spotlight on him from the headlights. The photo of the blurry Aboriginal child at the bottom of the page could symbolise that the Aboriginal child was slowly being forgotten or that he was in the back of the boys mind and was a constant memory. It could also tie to the theme of the Stolen Generation as children went missing and became nothing but a blurry memory for their families to remember. Next to the boy is an empty packet of tablets and this could be the illustrator’s way of telling the reader that the boy was depressed and since the background is black that could symbolise nothingness or darkness that the boy feels is engulfing him. The series of images at the top of the page could portray scattered memories that the boy is using the tablets to escape from. An excerpt from page sixty-five “them finding me on my bed, almost gone” gives evidence of the boy wanting an ‘escape’ from the grief he feels and possibly making a suicide attempt to permanently escape the dark places in the depths of his mind.…

    Into The Woods

Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods. While these aspects were vital to the performances success I will be concentrating on the diction and acting.…

Two visual elements are used in this piece. One of those elements is line. Organic lines are used in the hair of the woman to give a natural yet passionate feel to the piece. The curvature of the lines are meant to incite a fluid sense of spontaneity. The contour lines are vague because the piece was made using recycled paper. There is also four intersecting lines surrounding the edge of the piece that frames and give structure to the chaotic hair. This creates a lot of contrast. The second element used in this piece is color. Cool colors are used in this piece to give contrast to the passionate lines. The color scheme of dark and light blue, black, white, and green really give the piece a calming sensation. This better controls the firey passion that is the…
