There are two critical decisions Joe needs to make in order to run a successful coffee shop. The first will be to determine the best location for his coffee shop. After gathering the appropriate information, hopefully, Joe will be presented with an idea of the types of coffee shops that perform well in different locations such as suburbs and inner cities. Once he has come to this decision it will lead him to the next key factor; what type of coffee experience he will have. Will it be a fast paced coffee shop depending on a high volume of sales, or will it be more based on a gourmet coffee shop experience complete with a lounging area, and perhaps offer snacks as well. Most likely, it will be a hybrid of the two.

The coffee studies Joe viewed were not entirely relevant. Most have glaring issues with their methodology and reliability of the data collected. The issue with the first two studies is the sample size; the sample size being one. This is too small to be a sample, and as such are merely opinions of individuals. One thing that might be slightly useful is that the first study did include prices of coffee, albeit plain black. The savings of a few cents were not enough make the researcher value the cheaper coffee from burger king, as he chose the most expensive ones. However, as this is just opinion it may not be indicative of the target population.
The third research study was extremely biased, as the researcher stated that Starbucks had lost its way from the very beginning. Then he interviewed 100 people outside of an organic coffee shop about which type of coffee they prefer. This sample is going to more biased as those who frequent organic coffee shops with be almost a niche market of the whole coffee drinking pool. Unsurprisingly, the interviewees chose the organic as the highest rated, while putting Starbucks last.

The coffee shop makes use of high quality ingredients that are prepared under very strict guidelines. There are a number of business concepts that can be charted to be able to directly compete with the business; Java Culture. First, the business should offer premium quality coffee that is imported from the premium cocoa growing countries such as Brazil. The preparation process should follow the most pristine quality preparation guidelines thus ensuring that the products of firm are of very high quality and thus serve the purpose of the premium quality offering (Longenecker, Petty & Palich, 2012). Rather than focus on a few products as Java Culture currently does, there should be a focus on the provision of a wide variety of products for instance brewed teas, espresso drinks and other refreshment beverages which will be sold at the coffee bar of the firm. The firm can also add more products for instance sandwiches, pastries for the clients as well as small salads (Ferrell & Hartline, 2011). Coffee beans and preparation information will also be offered to the gourmet customers who usually prefer to make their coffee in the comfort of their homes.     For my taste test experiment I decided to do Starbucks vs. Dunkin’ Donuts. I am a bit of a coffee fanatic. I can always been seen with a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee in hand at least once a day. So for my experiment I decided to do my taste test experiment to compare to the two companies coffee brands. I went to Starbucks and got a Venti Caramel hot coffee with crème and then went and got a large Dunkin Donuts caramel hot coffee with crème. I decided that my sorority house is where I knew I could find plenty of willing people to participate in my blind taste test experiment. The first taste test I did was the triangle taste test. In this test I make 2 small cups of Starbucks coffee and 1 cup of small Dunkin Donuts coffee for them to try. Due to the fact that I am such a coffee fanatic I can tell the difference and figured that everyone else would be able to do that same. I was extremely surprised when several 3 of my 6 friends had chosen one DD and Starbucks coffee as being the same brand. Next, I did a paired comparison, where I put one drink in one cup and the other in the other cup. A majority actually preferred DD coffee to Starbucks. But the answers were all over the map when you asked them which coffee was which brand. Many people were unable to identify the difference between which was Starbucks and which was DD. One friend stated that she believed that Starbucks has a much bolder coffee taste compared to the more mild coffee taste of Dunkin Donuts. After doing the two Taste Test Experiments I have come to the conclusion that even thought people say that they only drink or prefer a certain brand, if you do a blind taste test they may not be able to identify the difference in the two competing brands.…
