The Rock Cycle The rock cycle begins when Earth’s plates shift around leaving gaps in between them making a volcano. The magma under Earth’s crust come through the gap and spill out of the volcano. Then the magma (lava) cools down and hardens into igneous rock. As time passes the igneous rock weathers (using substances such as water) away into little chips. After getting smaller, erosion (using elements such as wind) transports the little rocks to different places. The deposition stage occurs when the rock drops and is no longer moving by erosion. Soon more rocks go through these stages and eventually start piling up in layers. They then squeeze together and make sedimentary rock. As layers keep piling on each other the pressure push the rocks down toward the magma. As the sedimentary rock gets closer to the magma it starts to melt. The pressure and the heat change the rocks shape making metamorphic rock. Still the metamorphic rock continues its journey down into Earth’s crust and finally makes it to the magma. Sedimentary rock is formed when rock is weathered and eroded and the resulting sediments are compressed to form a new rock. Metamorphic is formed when rock is subjected to intense heat and pressure underground. Through these processes, each type of rock can be converted into either of the other two types (Withgott, 2011). Over time, wind, weather, and physical damage can erode rock into gravel, sand, silt, and clay particles. Once rock has been broken down into small components they can be deposited, often in or along water features in layers. Over time, these are compressed into layered rock, called sedimentary rock. This, too, can erode back into smaller fragments.     The role of plate tectonics in the origin of igneous rock is extremely important. Igneous rock is formed from magma that reaches the continental and oceanic crust or through hot spots that are around the world. There are three different places where igneous rocks can form; where the lithospheric plates pull apart at mid ocean ridges, where plates come together at seduction zones, and where continental crust is pushed together making the crust thicker and allowing it to heat to a melting point. The word igneous comes from the Latin word for fire, igneous rocks start off as a hot, fluid material which is usually erupted from the Earth’s surface as lava, or magma at shallow depths or deep depths. Magma is a mush like material that can carry a load of minerals, but people often think of lava and magma as a liquid like material of molten metals. The three types of igneous rocks are extrusive, intrusive and platonic rocks. Extrusive rocks are rocks that form and cool on the crust of the Earth whether it is on the continental crust or the oceanic crust. Extrusive rocks cool quickly, within a few seconds to months and they have invisible or very small grains; extrusive rocks have an aphanitic texture. Intrusive rocks are rocks that form within already existing rocks causing sills and dikes. Intrusive rocks cool slower than extrusive rocks, taking over thousands of years to cool completely and leaving them with small to medium sized grains. Plutonic rocks take over millions of years to cool and have large “pebble” size grains. These “pebbles” are often up to a meter across. Both intrusive and platonic rocks have a phaneritic texture. Hot spots are another way that magma is released onto the crust and when it is on the ocean floor can create new islands.…

    Igneous rocks can come from two hot liquid like materials, which are lava and magma, these to substances are a lot alike, magma is what lava is before it is taken to the Earth's surface by a volcano eruption. These substances being such a large part of the forming of Igneous rocks is where the rock gets its name, the word igneous comes from the word ignis, which is the Latin word for fire. Magma and Lava are a consistency like molten metal and they carry crystallized minerals and are hot enough to change existing rocks forms. Igneous rocks are created in three places. The first is where the lithospheric plates pull apart making a gap in the at the ridges under the ocean. The second is where the continental crust is forced together. The third is where the plates come together. As the lava or magma moves they collect different minerals and these minerals begin to crystallize as the lava or magma cools. The speed of the cooling process helps to determine the physical characteristics of the rocks. With the movement and the new minerals that come this will change the rock. There are two types of Igneous rocks. The first kind of Igneous rock is Extrusive rock, which is formed when magma escapes through the where the plates meet, these rocks cool very quickly some in a matter of seconds which makes their grains very small called the Aphanitic texture. The second kind of Igneous rock is Intrusive rock, which is made underneath the Earth's surface which makes it cool very slowly some take thousands of years, which makes larger size grains called Phanertic texture. The classification of each rock is based on the minerals that it is made up of, some of the common minerals found in Igneous rocks are olivine, mica, feldspar, quartz, and pyoxenes. Intrusive igneous rocks form when the lava cools beneath the Earth’s surface, in the core of it. There are 6 main types of igneous rocks. They are Rhyolite, Granite, Andesite, Diorite, Basalt and Gabbro. Although these are the most common, there are hundreds of other types. The reason that there are so many different types of igneous rocks is because of fractional crystallization, which is a sort of reversal of fractional melting.
