Description of New Technology

• A breakthrough technology utilizing:
• External Photoelectric Effect (Einstein, Nobel 1921),

• Tunnel Junction  Quantum Wall  Nanotechnology

• Alkaline Solar Cell technology stems from the idea of using the

synergy of two different technologies already in industrial use:

The alkali photocathode photomultiplier tube technology (the highest sensitivity light detectors) 2. Thin-film deposition technology

Description of New Technology
• The quantum efficiency for alkali photocathode technology

is between 10% and 30% under solar light irradiation. This means up to 3 times the efficiency oftraditional commercial silicon solar cells.
• Alkaline

Solar Cells are able to have guaranteed efficiency between 10% and 30% without any external voltage applied (as in alkali photocathode technology), moreover their design allows for a solid state photomultiplier stage that allows for multiplication of the electric charge produced by “avalanche effect”, this in practical terms means that quantum efficiency is higher than 30%, as Alkaline Solar Cells can be also thought as “a photovoltaic phototransistor".

In photovoltaic cells, such as the Hubble Space Telescope silicon solar cell shown here, the basic materials, the doping and the shape of the junction are chosen in such a way as to increase their capability of transforming the light energy into electrical energy. Each cell is capable of producing a small amount of current at a relatively low voltage, more or less like a common pen-light battery. Many of them have to be combined in series to produce the amount of electric power needed for a satellite to function. A silicon solar cell from the Hubble Space Telescope has an operating efficiency of about 14%.…

N-type doped films are often used in thin film technology, where zinc oxide serves as a TCO (transparent conducting oxide). N-type doping is possible by introduction of hydrogen or zinc interstitial defects. Oxygen vacancies are no longer considered to contribute to the n-type conductivity because these levels are too deep in the band gap. P-type doping is difficult and is currently an active area of research. Thin-film solar cells, LCD and flat panel displays are typical applications of this material. Zinc oxide is transparent and conductive, and can therefore be used as a transparent electrode. Indium tin oxide (ITO) is another transparent conducting oxide often used in microelectronics.…

In studying solid state electronic devices we are interested primarily in the electrical behavior of solids. However, we shall see in later chapters that the transport of charge through a metal or a semiconductor depends not only on the properties of the electron but also on the arrangement of atoms in the solid. In the first chapter we shall discuss some of the physical properties of semiconductors compared with other solids, the atomic arrangements of var- ious materials, and some methods of growing semiconductor crystals. Topics such as crystal structure and crystal growth technology are often the subjects of books rather than introductory chapters; thus we shall consider only a few of the more important and fundamental ideas that form the basis for under- standing electronic properties of semiconductors and device fabrication.…

Thin Film is first generated in the 20th Century. With the rapid development of resource and advance scientific knowledge on preparation, structure evolution and the properties of thin film, more advance and sophisticated thin film are created by preparation devices and method based on advances in vacuum technology[1]. Thin Film is a second generation of solar cells after silicon solar cells. This smart material reacts to temperature variations, electricity or magnetic fields or pressure variation since the late 1970’s but it’s only famous in small markets example calculator powered by amorphous silicon. Nowadays it is accessible in very large modules. This thin film was expected to make major advances in the market.…

A photoelectric device can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. An intrinsic semiconductor has its own charge carriers and is not an efficient semiconductor, for example, silicon. In intrinsic devices the only available electrons are in the valence band, and hence the photon must have enough energy to excite the electron across the entire bandgap. Extrinsic devices have impurities, also called dopants, added whose ground state energy is closer to the conduction band; since the electrons do not have as far to jump, lower energy photons (that is, longer…
