Today I had an assignment for my sociology 101 class. The assignment was to observe the environment around us. The main goal is to see the actions or interactions of people around us. During my observation, I saw a pattern. I was scrupulous on picking the location of to people watch, but ultimately decided the memorial union was the best place, due to the fact that there are typically abundant amounts of students there.…
The norm is the type of behaviour or way of doing something that is accepted by the society you are in.…
They said words I couldn’t make out in Mom’s general direction, but did not look back, their eyes focused on the gravel in front of them. I hate the gravel. It sticks in my feet, and Mom is not very careful about getting it out. Maybe their Mom isn’t any better at it.…
1. Both books mention the role the media plays in constructing public perception of (juvenile) offending. Think about the role of the media—news media but also pure entertainment media—and discuss its role in our understanding of juvenile delinquency.…
The social position of Muslim women differs throughout time periods and countries, such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. The consequences of breaking the laws in these nations differ as well. In addition, different social factors affect the way Muslim women are treated. These social positions are perceived differently amongst men and women in Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan.…
As you write these assignments, try to answer one important question: how does sociology help you to make sense of the phenomenon you have observed. The length of each paper is about 6-8 pages (double space, typed only). Before you do these assignments, please review chapter 1, chapter 2, and the writing guidelines of this class. Creativity and sociological insights are greatly valued in these assignments.…
There are many different magazines targeted toward different groups of people. Women’s magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, direct many of their articles towards dating life, body image, and sex advice. Men’s Health, a magazine for men, is also a magazine that’s articles are directly oriented towards dating, sex and body image. The growing impact of pop culture is directly effecting what we read in magazines.…
I remember watching and reading Super Size Me in middle school and Food INC. as well in high school. My initial reaction to Super Size Me was disgust. I found the way they treated chickens and how McDonald’s made their food disgusting. Just prior to viewing Super Size Me, I was already visiting fast food places like McDonald’s less frequently and after viewing Super Size Me I rarely ate at a fast food place. My visits to fast food places decreased at a rate to around once a year. However, as time passed my visits to fast food places slowly increased and by sophomore to junior year in high school I actually started to enjoy eating fast food again. By the time I saw Food INC around sophomore to junior year, I was desensitized to eating fast food because of the good taste, the speed, and especially the cheap prices. When I viewed Food INC for the first time in high school, I found it quite boring because I rationalized a belief that “food is food” so I didn’t care at all how food is made as long as it could fill my stomach.…
In normal sense, norms are basically something that has an authoritative standard. According to my textbook that is "Sociology of Modules" by Richard Schaeffer, norms are the established standards of behavior maintained by a society (Schaeffer 2018, 61). Norms are followed by everyone in our day to day life in our society. But for my research paper, I was supposed to break a social norm. The result of breaking a norm was pretty interesting and funny.…
In order to understand our adherence to social norms we must understand what they are and the various ways in which they can be broken and violated. These violations can vary greatly and be anywhere between quirky and frightening. The intensity of discomfort associated with these violations depends not only on the violation itself but on the individual performing, experiencing, or witnessing it making the spectrum of reactions widespread and interesting. There are two ways to truly explore norm violations, to observe others both performing and reacting to violations and to perform them yourself and observe the reactions of others.…
I drew with crayons. In conclusion, my lackluster movement abilities and advanced speech skills, led me to become the ideal campaigner, for my siblings.…
A coworker and I were bored one day at the preschool we worked at and decided to test out a theory about kids and their manners. We worked in a preschool that also did after care. The age ranges of the kids in the soon to be experiment were from three years of age to twelve. We started testing the kids and their manners for a workday; I figured the younger kids had better manners then the older kids and my coworker thought the opposite. We tested the kids without their knowledge. It was simple things we were looking for holding the door open for someone, picking something up if someone dropped it, saying please and thank you, sharing and so on. Thinking back on it I would say there was experimental bias being that the teachers were there to correct the mistakes we were looking for. Since it was a theory being tested between coworkers I am sure there was a bit of competition as to who wins as well. If given an opportunity to test this theory again I would most likely try testing the theory for a few more days, spend a day with each group. It would be hard to test on a theory like this one with consent, I believe, because the older kids would have been on their best behavior. Ethically we should have informed the parents that the kids were being tested on their behavior and gotten permission since they were all under age. Since it was two bored coworkers coming up with something to do we really did not think that far into it at the time. In the end the five year olds had the best manners in comparison to the younger and older…
Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…
Social norms are rules of certain kind of behavior that society uses to evaluate the population and provides normalcy. When it comes to responding to the breaking of social norms people have different ways to cope or react to it. Some reactions can be pleasant, some could be horrible or even judgmental. Some people believe breaking a social norm could be needed to help govern or control the society. On the other hand others believe breaking social norms are un-normal and that no one should break those rules. There are so many social norms that sometimes it feels impossible not to break any. Many social norms like walking on the wrong side of the sidewalk, talking to yourself in public, or even not wearing the same clothes everyone else thinks is cool could be a tremendous norm broken in today’s young society. An everyday norm would be wearing a clean shirt, but when you break that norm by not wearing a clean shirt, it was a drastic shock to the people that are stuck in the societies mold. What if wearing a stained shirt was the normal thing to do for a certain person or group of persons? Are the people stuck in societies mold wrong for thinking their norm is correct? There really is no wrong or right answer to those questions because my normal way of looking at things may not be the same as the next persons.…
