COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course in basic essay writing is designed to teach students paragraph and theme development with emphasis on syntax, organization, logical thinking and originality. Students will become familiar with the various modes and strategies of expository and argument/persuasive essays as well as the standard methods of research and documentation of sources. In class writing exercises, journal entries and formal extended essays will be assigned to allow the student the opportunity to develop these skills. A research paper is required.
OUTCOMES:
Upon the successful completion of the course, students will have demonstrated their ability to:
1. Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation in their writing;
2. Utilize writing process techniques including prewriting, revising, and editing;
3. Write clearly focused, articulate introductions, thesis statements, essay maps, body paragraphs, and conclusions;
4. Write original expository essays developing a controlling idea in a well organized manner using college-level vocabulary and appropriate diction;
5. Utilize the modes and strategies of expository writing as well as research skills and techniques;
6. Develop an extensive properly documented research paper of 1500-2000+ words;
7. Evaluate, through critical awareness, what the student reads, hears, and writes;
8. Use libraries for reference and research purposes;
9. Apply APA format, documentation, and referencing rules.
