Sociology
All societies have norms and values; they can be formal or informal, mores or folkways. Society also does its best to encourage or enforce what it views as appropriate behavior while discouraging or punishing those that shows negative behavior. At the same time however, where there is a "right" way to behave, there is also a wrong way. In this case of societal norms, the wrong way is considered deviant. Deviance is behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a society. Although, the subculture that doesn't conform to the norms or common values of a given society is a deviance subculture. Some of the common values held in the U.S. include striving to get a good education, being successful, and having a career. Norms on a bus, is behaving properly or/ and follow the rules given. Most people in our society do follow the guidelines. When choosing a location to do my observation, I chose to ride the TARC bus to see the different types of groups interacting with one another. There were multiple people getting on and off the bus. Also, there was not just subculture on the bus, but also counterculture on the bus. There were younger people using the TARC bus than older people. So, an older lady was shocked at how this younger lady that took action when a white guy said the phrase, "What's up my n*gga?" The young lady responded back with, "What's up?" See in the 60- year-old lady's lifetime, she isn't used to hearing a different race saying "n*gga" unless it's used as an insult. So the older lady said, "Excuse me?" Then the young lady explained to her that that's how the "younger generation" greets each other, no matter what the color of your skin complexion. Then the white guy apologized to the both of the women and said he wouldn't do it again. The language that today's society is completely different from decades ago. Another thing I seen was the use of technology. Almost everyone on the TARC bus had a cell phone. Most people used their cell

Deviance is the term used to describe the violation of norms. Howard S. Becker, the sociologist that came up with the thought that says “It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act that make something deviant”. A good example of the act of being deviant is when you see someone walking around naked or not politely dressed in public. It is something different that you don't see every day so you take it as something “Weird” and make it into a huge deal. It makes no sense in what you see, but they might think that it is normal and is very usual to them. Another good example is that if you were to go to the mountains and live with a tribe for a day or two, you will see that you guys are much different from each other, them thinking…

    > The sociological perspective is described as seeing the general in the particular. In this essay I will attempt to apply the sociological perspective to analyze song lyrics from the first verse of the song My Block by Tupac Shakur (see appendix for lyrics). Tupac (1971-1996) is the most famous gangster rap artist of all times. He was well known for his lyrics and their ability to express the grief of the Black community. He was an advocate for Black rights and very much against the societal system and class societies. Many say he exaggerated the conditions under which the Black community and the lower class were in because he was a wealthy man rapping about suppression. To other’s he was part of the petite-bourgeoisie, but he was consistent in attempting to better the conditions under which the lower class were in.…

My paper titled toys and gender, is based on the toys of today and how they relate to gender socialization. I decided to go to the local Wal-Mart in Cookeville, Tn. I chose this store because it is a worldwide known large retail store. I concluded that it would be a good store to analyze because it is thought of as a family store where many families go to shop. Therefore, I knew that there would be a wide variety of toys to analyze and collect data. I went to Wal-Mart December the 3rd. I analyzed the toy sections of Wal-Mart and how the toys are associated with gender, color sound, types of play they encourage, types of interactions they cause, and what they prepare children for. With the exception of preschool toys that were sometimes offered in gender-neutral packaging, kids’ toys were largely segregated into different aisles according to gender. And within those aisles, the markings of gender were clear. The “girls’” section resembled the aftermath of an explosion of Pepto-Bismol. In the “boys’” section, there seemed to be a profusion of aggressive, hyper-muscled, weapon-wielding action figures. And in both realms, the majority of toys seemed to be explicitly tied to movies and television…

Many sociologists have said that the sociology of deviance is dead, such as Colin Sumner in 1975. It was said that behaviors are not deviant but rather just seen as not normal in society, but the term ‘normal’ cannot exactly be defined. Deviance is a discipline in Sociology that many claim is now ‘dead’. Deviance is an act with refers to ‘norm-breaking’ in our society. A social norm is appropriate behavior for a social group and an appropriate behavior for the environment an individual is in. Deviance is the act of breaking these social norms whether it be your behavior or something you do. Once you break…

While watching the film there were many moments that struck me as interesting. The first moment that struck me the most was when Jean Reynolds, who is a 51 year old, certified nursing assistant, daughter said she had cancer. That she would not live for long because Jean could not afford to get her daughter treatment. The second moment that struck me was when Barbara Brooks, a 36 year old, single mother said that she was “hustling backwards”. She wants to provide for her children, and is even trying to get further in her education to accomplish this. However every time she advanced there would be something that pulled her back. For example when she got a raise then they took some of her benefits away.…

It is hard to believe that it’s been almost thirteen years since Saudis and al-Qaeda operatives attacked our nation on September 11, 2001. In his article entitled “Language, Symbols, and Media,” Robert E. Denton Jr. expresses these components in their relation to 9/11. Although the consequences of 9/11 remain, the language, symbols, and media provide insight into the impact this specific day had upon our cultural, social and political life today.…

Being a deviant person in our American culture means being marked as an outsider. Labeling deviant behavior is a society’s attempt to regulate people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so each person falls within the “normative” range of things. According to our American values, your friend is deviant in some ways but some of the things he does wouldn’t be considered deviant.…
