I think there are a few sociological concepts that really summarize the issues in the article. Race, I think, is the main one that summarizes this article because the article talks about how race is still a big obstacle in the job market for African-Americans. Many African-Americans are not taken seriously or even considered for a job because of their skin color. Another sociological concept that I think summarizes the article is that black people are considered to be a minority group, this means they are “people who are singled out for unequal treatment and who thinks themselves as objects of discrimination”. Williams, a black man, applied to the Dallas money management firm, and the hiring manager was really excited to hear from him because there weren’t many people who went to prestigious business schools in that area. So, they set up a meeting to talk about the job opportunity, but when he walked in and introduced himself. He said that the representatives from the company appeared stunned and the company’s interest in him cooled. I feel like this describes individual discrimination because it is a person-to-person discrimination. An example for institutional discrimination from the article is that white, Asian, and Hispanic managers hired more white people and fewer black people than black managers did, according to the Journal of Labor and Economics. I think this describes institutional discrimination because it is negative treatment of a minority group that is built into society’s institutions.

Social class and race are related in this article because I feel like many job employers, in this article think that black people are lower class, and that they are inferior to the job employers because of their skin color. They relate skin color to social class, and I think this idea comes from slave owners back in the day. Many people have this stereotype that all black people are poor and from the ghetto, when in reality it is not like that at all.
