Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,

“What to the Slave, is the Fourth of July” is a powerful testament of American hypocrisy. To read—let alone be present while the speech was delivered—would bring an overwhelming surge of shame and embarrassment of my actions (i.e. partaking in the active slave trade or lack of abolitionist support). Though many verses from this work are undeniably gut wrenching to the audience, the most thought provoking and life altering was when Douglass stated plainly, “the sunlight that brought life and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth of July is yours, not mine.”…

Freedom is something that has been rebelled against for many, many years. This is a recurring motif in the short story "Dancing Bear" by Guy Vanderhaeghe. Rebellion for the sake of freedom is worth everything, even death. Dieter Bethge rebels against the rules of Mrs Hax, his own ill body, and his mind.…

One of the most important social factors that impacted the scenario the most appeared to be economic status or social class. In the given scenario Tomas Juarez made the decision to work with under privileged kids from low-income families, although he started out working in a multi-diverse suburban school. The children that Juarez worked with in this were different from the children he later worked with in that these children were very active in school affairs and extracurricular activities. Not only did the children affect the situation but also the teachers. Juarez explained “It was a pleasure to work with a team who planned interesting lessons and based on a constructivist approach, engaged students in the content, and developed higher-order thinking skills.” Which will bring us to our next social factor, environment or locality. With the changing of environments he described how the smell of the halls never set well and the halls were dirty, at the beginning of the school year. His classroom did not even have enough chairs to seat all of his students. The windows were covered with cardboard-like material and some of the tiles were missing from the ceiling of his classroom, Juarez described the transition between atmospheres as he had been “spoiled” in the suburbs. The third and most interesting social factor from the scenario I found was social stratification, although Juarez started his career knowing that he wanted to work with children from families with low-incomes that would classify as stratification simply because he ranks the people and children from both experience based on income, wealth and obviously their power in society. A solution to the scenario is that Juarez could use what he has learned from both experiences and apply it to his current situation to help improve the school and lives of the children. An example of him making an impression on these students would be similar to the movie “Freedom Writers” when the teacher moved into the school of…

Throughout the United States, there are many regular disparities among our education system. First, there is an alarming disparity in education especially in the United States. Students from lower socioeconomic statuses do not always receive the same education as those from higher socioeconomic statuses for many reasons. In areas with lack of resources there tends to be poorer school institutions in comparison to wealthier neighborhoods. In addition, public schools are funded by taxes and therefore, the quality of teachers and amount of resources depends on the quantity of taxes individuals pay. Within these areas, families…

As a resident of Mississippi for the majority of my life, I have become more familiar with teenage pregnancy than most. In addition, Mississippi was recently the focus of national news with the recent vote to illegalize abortion. T. C. Boyle chooses a debatable subject to write about drawing many discussions about ethics. However, Boyle attempts to bring more light to teenage pregnancy, and gives the reader a different side than commonly assumed about teenage pregnancy. Often assumptions are made about the socioeconomic status of the teenager that is expecting. This has attached a stigma to the female expecting, and…

In my opinion socioeconomic status, cultural context, and ethnicity play a large role in human development. Socioeconomic status can affect education, healthcare, housing, nutrition, and habits among a host of other things. SES can bring about disadvantages and advantages, as well as create opportunities or limit the ability to succeed. In education a lower SES can mean the difference between going to a preschool program receiving a beneficial start to education and staying at home and being placed in front of a television program. A lower SES can make a difference in healthcare as well in being able to have access to thing such as pre natal vitamins, medications, and preventative medicine. SES and housing can effect development…

Socioeconomic status (SES) has various important concepts that are a measure of resources such as income, poverty, and education, and the access to goods, services, and knowledge that these resources allow those who have them. In the United States, black and Hispanic persons are disproportionately represented among the lower SES group. The correlation between SES and health may differ within race and ethnicity groups. Regards to education, those who have not graduated from high school may have difficulty with reading or writing to get the information they need. We live in a World full of technology and education is the first step toward success in everything we do. Education helps to ensure ones opportunity for a better living. I, like so many of the educators out there am very interested in exploring the many variables that help to contribute to the quality in performance in our students. These variables are as much outside of school as they are in school. I am curious of the relationship between socioeconomic status (lower class, middle class, and upper class) and academic performance.…

Socioeconomic status (SES) is one of the most widely studied constructs in the social sciences. Several ways of measuring SES have been proposed, but most include some quantification of family income, parental education, and occupational status. Research shows that SES is associated with a wide variety of health, cognitive, and socioemotional outcomes in children, with effects beginning prior to birth and continuing into adulthood. A variety of mechanisms linking SES to child well-being have been proposed, with most involving differences in access to material and social resources. For children, SES impacts well-being at multiple levels.…
