The use of cell-phones soared; everyone including my grandmother acquired a cell phone. Looking back to what life used to be before the cell phone evolution few years ago, it gives me a clear understanding of the positive impact cell phones had on the society. I remember when my father used to travel home every week from Lagos to see my grandmother in the village; because there was no other way he could communicate with her. However, cell phone innovation has made it possible for my father to be in touch with my grandmother in the village on a regular basis. The way people used to communicate and do business has changed tremendously; the life of the common people has also been touched in different ways. It cuts across every facet of life, which is why I feel delighted to talk about the…

The GSM Association commissioned Ovum to conduct a study into the economic and social benefits of mobile services in Bangladesh. We were asked to examine whether there were any policy barriers that may prevent the full extent of any benefits of mobile services from being realised. In the event that policy and legislative barriers were found, we were asked to identify recommendations for change. In recent years, the mobile industry in Bangladesh has developed at an extraordinary rate. Today there are approximately ten million mobile customers and coverage extends to 90% of the population. With a population of 44 million (2005 figures), Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country in the world. Our key findings from the study are as follows:…

For some people, mobile phones are a wonderful convenience of modern life; for others, they are irritating contraptions that should be banned from public areas. A cell phone or mobile phone is an electronic telecommunication device with the same basic capability as a conventional fixed-line telephone, but which is also entirely portable and is not required to be connected with a wire to the telephone network. Most current mobile phones connect instead to the network using a wireless radio wave transmission technology. The mobile phone communicates via a cellular network of base stations, also known as cell sites, which are in turn linked to the conventional telephone networks. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, a mobile phone can support many additional services such as SMS for text messaging, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and videos. In less than twenty years, mobile phones have gone from being rare and expensive pieces of equipment used by businesses to an all pervasive low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile phones now outnumber land-line telephones, with most adults and many children now owning mobile phones. It is not uncommon for young adults to simply own a mobile phone instead of a land-line for their residence. In some developing countries, where there is little existing fixed-line infrastructure, the mobile phone has become widespread.…
