Social Work Personal Statement
For some defining social work may be simplistic, however as a professional in the field I often find it challenging to truly define social work straightforwardly. Perhaps it is because nothing about social work is straightforward, one-dimensional or tranquil. In social work, we face countless different circumstances, dynamics, and situations when working with clients, thus making social work is so unique. The social work field demands empathy, resourcefulness, tenacity and tolerance. Professionals in the social work field exemplify advocacy, support, and alleviation to those who are most in need. I believe social work is having a mission behind the work that we do and willingness to help those most vulnerable to create pathways and enhance quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.

I receive the educational foundation that I needed for best practice, but also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience through my senior field practicum. As a family advocate intern at Northern Virginia Family Service Early Head Start program, I gained many valuable skills that I found essential for direct-practice social workers. Gaining case management skills and becoming knowledgeable about community resources and public assistance was very gratifying because it meant I could share my knowledge with families who could benefit from it. In addition, preforming intakes and family assessments helped me understand family’s needs, appropriate interventions, and patterns within communities. Furthermore, I gain knowledge on child development and the tools that are necessarily for a strong family unit and children’s well-being.
