Case Scenario: A client with a wife and five children has been the sole provider by working for a company for twenty-six years and gets laid off. Regrettably, he is having difficulty finding new employment because he appears predominately overqualified, therefore employers continually turn him away. Consequently, due to the loss of his job; the client worries about meeting the physiological and safety needs of his family. Since he is the sole provider and unable to find work the family may lose all basic physical needs and the client's’ perception of what could happen views as failure to provide protection and stability.
Unfortunately, the negative feeling of not being able to provide causes the client to pull away from the family; continually leaving the house to seek work, but is out drinking with friends. Moreover, when he returns home does not speak to anyone, showing signs of depression and it is starting to affect his family relationship. The first step in helping the client is directing them to support groups for alcohol users before the situation get too far out of hand. The second level is to motivate self-change to lift his self-esteem, self-respect, respect for others, and learn to deal with issues in interpersonal functioning. Once the client is stable and ready to achieve personal growth, he can be introduced to new forms of job training and placement to become well equipped to find a different type of employment and since he is inexperienced in the field, he will not be overqualified but will have adequate work references. In obtaining a job, the client can start working on meeting his basic needs and work on reconnecting in the family relationship through family
