Assignment #3 Older Adult Development Paper

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate mastery in the application of theoretical and empirical work relevant to the biological, cognitive, and psychosocial development of an older adult based on a face-to-face interview. You will demonstrate your understanding of HBSE theories through critical analysis and clear articulation of supporting evidence including examples from the case and scholarly literature.
Selection of Interviewee

The interviewee must be 70 years of age or older and may be a neighbor, coworker, fellow community member, casual acquaintance, or anyone else who is willing to volunteer for the interview. Ask your instructor for suggestions if you have trouble identifying an interviewee.

Do not choose a family member or a close friend of the family for this assignment. •

Do not use a family member of a friend or colleague nor an instructor at the
USC School of Social Work.

The interview must be face-to-face. Mailing or e-mailing questions and responses is not acceptable. Neither is conducting the interview by phone, Skype or other electronic means. Most social work practice is still done face-to-face and this exercise provides practice with in person communication. Use a pseudonym in the paper to protect confidentiality.

An interview guide is provided in a Supplemental Handout to assist you in conducting the interview.

A socio-historical timeline is also provided to assist you in understanding some of the larger socio-historical contexts that your interviewee lived through.

I wanted to bring to your attention some issues that I had about a professor in the school of social work, J. Breezer Rickey. I had her for SOWK 370 this fall. As a social worker, I feel that her sense of empathy for her students is not present in her daily interactions with students. She has made several rude comments to me (which I have attached as a PDF to this email), and those comments have made my self-esteem go down a considerable amount. A social worker should life people up, not bring them down, as is the situation here.…

In this essay I will discuss how I feel that I have developed personally and professionally as a social work student during the first level of the degree course. I will do this through examination of reflective accounts recorded during the placement learning opportunity. I believe that the use of reflection has been very significant in enhancing my personal skills and learning about my own values. I also believe that the course has instilled me with more self awareness and has given me a better understanding of how I am perceived by others. I have learned that through anti oppressive practice, social workers are able to promote inclusion by challenging discrimination and inequalities. In this essay, I will examine the methods, tools, and techniques that I have learned to date. I will conclude by discussing my particular learning needs and plan for the remainder of the course. As part of this, I will consider my learning style and the necessary methods I will utilise to bridge the learning gaps.…

Whilst a deep theoretical analysis of race, gender, class, sexuality and ability is needed to understand the roots and origins of societal issues today, equally important is taking that theory out of the classroom and into action based praxis. As an undergraduate student at Columbia in the fall of 2013, I co-founded the campaign for Columbia to divest from fossil fuels and engaged with youth across the country to build a movement for climate justice. Having no experience in community organizing or campaigns prior to college, I had a steep learning curve when I organized a summer conference with trainings for hundreds of students focusing on how to build an anti-oppressive and inclusive climate justice movement. I have kept the core values of…
