Social Stratification In The United States
Social stratification certainly impacts all people on a variety of levels. One particular example that stands out to me is my aunt Karen’s experiences with coming out as a lesbian mid-way through her life. After being married for many years and having three children, she struggled with her sexual orientation and how to reveal this to her very conservative, elderly parents. Because this was a number of years ago, people generally still held negative views regarding those who identify as LGBTQ, especially in the southern region of the US. There was clearly a divide between homosexual and LGBTQ individuals, which resulted in oppression, hate crimes, and other forms of discrimination.
