Social Norms
Social norms are expectations or rules to which people go by day to day. There are certain unwritten rules that outline how a person should behave socially; for instance, standing in line or stopping at a stop sign. When a social norm is being broken, people tend to act differently to it depending on the degree to which the norm was broken. Some broken norms may be taken it in form of jokes, some may be taken negatively and others can lead to serious consequences, like going to jail. Some people tend to act a certain way according to their environments, others just do what is pleasing to them. As I arrived to Tempe market place outlet, right on the North-West side of the parking lot, I noticed a car waiting on another to back up so that he could park, next I know, a woman driving a Toyota camry suddently drove up at such a fast pace to take the spot which the man driving the Honda was waiting on. Seeing what happened at that parking seemed so odd; I didn’t know that people acted out this way. Obviously the woman driving the Toyota broke a norm which is to be respectful of others. Looking around at what people were doing, a man walked right by me while I was sitting down enjoying my mojo frozen yogurt while doing my observation. He looked at me, and asked if I was going to finish up my cup of frozen yogurt because it looked delicious. Now, we both laughed and went on about his business and so did I. what this man did, is called a folkway norm, because it wasn’t as serious as robbing or stealing from a store. Plus, it was funny and did make my day a little
