Social Networking Questionnaire
The purpose of this questionnaire is to obtain general information about any given individual and their social networking habits. All the results gathered from this questionnaire will be used solely for academic purposes and can be seen in a research paper about the Uses and Abuses of Social Networking. The questionnaire in which you are about to participate in is for a final year project of a Computing Degree. It is conducted by Chris Bateson and involves questions regarding Social Networking Societies. It will approximately take 5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. Participation is optional and completely voluntary, and you may withdraw from this study at any time for any reason. The researcher assures confidentiality of your individual results. You may receive a copy of this consent form upon request, as well as the final results of the study by contacting the researcher: listed below. Please take the time to read and answer each question carefully, honestly and to the best of your ability, you may ask any questions you might have about this study now or in the future.     Social networking is all the rage with society. It is a main outlet for both personal and professional networking. Whether its job related and trying to put the word out for prospective employers or just connecting with a long distance friend via instant message, there aren’t too many people who have not taken advantage of this option to connect with others. There are not many households without the technology to take advantage of this option in communication. It seems to be the main form of contact within society today. The problem with this method of communication is that it does not allow for strong face to face interaction and allows society to in a sense to hide themselves. This inherently has led to a society with lower self esteem and has put a wall up with its users lowering standards of social interaction. It has had such a negative impact and should be used with greater caution especially within the teenage and young adult generation. Such sites as Facebook, Myspace and orkut have had an extremely negative impact on society and what should be perceived as acceptable. Social Networks and the ideas and activities associated with these networks have become profoundly detrimental to society today.     Social networking sites allow you to connect with old friends from high school, family that lives far away, in my case, even in another country as missionaries, friends down the street, coworkers, and just about anyone else you can think of. This can make you feel more connected to the world around you. You can keep up with what everyone is doing and accomplishing in their lives very easily through statuses and pictures posted every day. I have met new family members, whether by marriage or by birth, through Facebook who I otherwise have not had the opportunity to meet. One of my uncles, who recently passed away, had an affair about thirty years ago and did not realize he had a son from that affair until his son decided to find his father. Facebook is the only way I have been able to meet my new found cousin and his family. But when you start looking at the downside of social networking, it can make you wonder if it is really worth the cost. There have been many debates on the issues of using these sites for many years, so there have been quite a few downsides brought to the public’s attention such as health issues like anxiety or depression, lower grades for students of all levels, decreased productivity in the workplace, someone being stalked and so forth. Since there are way too many to cover in this paper, I am going to concentrate on three that I feel are some of the most important issues. Some of the issues with social networking sites are identity theft made easier, cyber bullying, which has caused many suicides, and strong face-to-face relationships suffering and being replaced by weaker online relationships.…

These have emerged as one of the main channels of communication on the web: links of all kinds are being forged, developed and broken almost instantly. According to a study1 published in France by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) on social networks, carried out using a sample of 1,002 people aged 18 years and over, 77 percent of Internet users say they are a member of at least one of the online social networks included in the study. These social networks’ notoriety is not simply the result of a mere fad.
