Social Networking-Boon or Bane
Pokes, likes and posts....
These words might have had a different meaning a few years ago, but now, they are used in reference to the social networking sites like facebook.
YES.Welcome to the world of social networking which has ended up making the world a very small place; more like a global village-where in getting in touch with people is just a click away!
But here is the big question- Is Social Networking really a boon or a bane?
Especially in the case of today’s generation.
Yes,there is no doubt that this helps increase our friends circle, the oppurtunity to interact with different people and make new friends across the world.
But social networking sites are acting as a major distraction for students as they are spending too much time on them, instead of utilising their time on books, newspapers and other educational resources. Parents are worried over the future prospects of their children as they spend much of their valuable time on social networking sites.Their interaction with family, their interest in outdoor activities, their concentration towards studies have come down drastically.Moveover youngsters are lured by conmen and other shady individuals through these sites and this is leading to grave risks.
Many students give reasons that by social networking they enhance their knowledge but in reality it is not so. In the name of that knowledge student’s waste time on so called gossips instead of doing something productive or educative.
The concern is that vulnerable teenagers, with limited experience of the world, are entering an unknown place without adult guidance
In a research carried out on school and college students it is found out that the students using the social networks excessively develop anti-social personality & also various health problems. It was also found that excessive use of these sites affect badly on the education of the students.

On a positive note, social media allows kids to practice life behind a safety curtain,

Social networking sites are a huge distraction among many teens and adults trying to focus on other things. It can be so addictive, some claim it is like a drug. Although some people may be able to limit the distraction, research has found that those who use these networks while studying scored 20% less than they would have if focused only on studying. I know first hand that this is true. I can't count how many times I have had to completely log out of Twitter and Facebook while studying because I couldn't stop checking to see what my friends were up to or to see the latest gossip. Social networks are extremely addicting because everybody wants to be in the "know." Nobody likes to feel left out, and if the information is accessible, many people figure that they should constantly utilize it.…

With various ongoing debates about why social networking may be bad for society, I have found it to be a positive resource. Social networking comes in many forms. It comes in the form of facebook, twitter, and even professional forums such as Linkedin. In such a fast-paced world, I find social networking to be an invaluable way of sharing ideas and interests that allow me to remain engaged. Although some may debate that social networking takes away from face to face and/or quality interactions, I have found it to be an invaluable tool in building community and networks. In fact, I believe it has given us a more effective way of communicating and engaging with one another especially in our fast-paced society.…

In today’s society, billions of people across the world are accessing the internet multiple times a day. Why wouldn’t they? Many people have the internet on their smart phones, and at the touch of a button can check their email, their Twitter, their Facebook, their bank account balance, you name it. Any social networking site or application, actually, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Youtube or something similar, it seems to easily suck up hours of a person’s day. Teens and children are accessing these sites while at school, and as soon as they get home from school. Adults are accessing these sites while at work and are often choosing to spend time checking their “walls” or profiles rather than spending time with their loved ones. There is no doubt that there are certain social benefits to these sites, many people say we need them to keep in touch with friends. However, the benefits do not outweigh the problems they cause. Social networking causes children and adults to be lazy and overweight, less productive at school and work, distracted, and, ironically, causes them to be anti-“social.” For these reasons, social networking is bad for society and should not be used.…

Many people in our society can relate. We wake up, check our phones. We go to school, check our phones. We go home, check our phones. And right before we go to bed, we check our phones. And for what? What are we constantly checking? Imagine logging out of social networking sites for one day. How would you feel? You would probably feel disconnected and want to log back on as soon as possible. This generation uses these websites to connect, to stay in the loop, and to become involved. However, people will take advantage of the use of these websites, and in return, the websites take over the majority of their life. The act of constantly wanting to be on a social website has become an obsessive, compulsive activity. Social networking creates a feeling of self-worth. It becomes a daily routine to always know others business, and if it is taken away, it becomes a craving. In this time, the current generation is very dependent and focused on social networking sites. Such social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. These social networking sites have sparked a debate on whether it is good or bad for the society. Social networking can put people at risk for cyber-bullying, false information, fake rumors, and online predators, along with other negative results. It causes two friends that are hanging out, or a mom and her daughter in the car together, to not even converse with each other. Their focus is what is on the phone or the computer. Not the person that they are with. The person thinks they are communicating by being on these social networking sites, when in reality they are being consumed by it. Social networking provides a false sense of identity online where people become limited and blocked from the real world, by a screen.…

Social media, even with some of its disadvantages, can prove to benefit the education of many young students, if used appropriately. Source B states that "Student research participants who studied in groups, even only once a week, were better prepared for class, and learned significantly more than students who worked on their own" (Thomaszewski). Although the lure of distraction may be enough to convince parents to have their children stay off social networks, motivation can be one of the main benefits of bringing social media into schools and can actually help students academically. Students who are more engaged in their studies tend to push themselves harder to work, ultimately bringing up their academic scores. The learning is also more self-directed, instead of it being forced upon by teachers, creating freedom that motivates the students to actively participate and learn from one another than from adults. The age of students also seem to play a part in educative social media, as a report from the Harvard School of Education states that social media, considered "cool" by many, can attract younger learners (Thomaszewski). As can plainly be seem here, social media is also able to attract a wide array of students, as the use of social media is particularly appealing to young students, allowing more groups of students to continue their education efficiently from high school and onwards, in a world where many kids…

What is social networking? According to dictionary.com, social networking is defined as “the use of websites or other online technologies to communicate with people and share information, resources, etc.” Social networking has become a must for many aspects of life. Human interaction often involves the discussion of something that appeared on a social networking website or the exchange of usernames for one to be found on a website. Many schools are incorporating the use of sites such as Facebook to keep students updated on events and homework, just in case the instructor had forgotten to mention something during class that day. A group of friends can make plans together over a group conversation since the number of callers in a multi-way call is limited. Clubs or organizations who need to spread the word of an upcoming event merely have to make a website or post a notice online and have people share it. There is less of a need for paid printed advertisements. Institutions and companies now give the option of applying online. But what has social networking done to the way people interact with each other?…

Education as a result of social networking has negative effects. Go to Yahoo Answers and see how many people use networking to try and answer their math homework or the science equation they need to balance. Thousands, if not millions of students immediately turn to social networking to be able to complete their homework (for them). For students today, they forget the need to filter the information they post. Many colleges and potential employers take a look at an applicant’s social networking profiles before granting acceptance or interviews. Most students don’t constantly evaluate the content they’re publishing online, which can bring about negative consequences months or years down the road.…
