Question: Has social networking improved the quality of relationships in society? Write an essay of between 1800-2000 words, clearly stating your view on the issue.

Social networking has had a major influence on society in the 21st century, enabling citizens to engage with each other in radically new and different ways. According to Brown (2011), we can fall in love online, create friendships, attend parties in other countries – all without leaving the comfort (and anonymity) of our armchair. And while the Generation Ys and Xs in our society are leading the adoption of the emerging social networking websites, it has been noted that the older generations are now catching up, with the strongest recent growth in usage among the 55 and 65 age group (Burbary 2010). So what does this apparent ‘revolution’ mean for society? How is social networking changing the way people relate to each other, and can we say that it has led to an improvement in relationships? This essay will argue that in the area social and political awareness, social networking has had a strongly positive effect. In other areas of society however, there is cause for some concern.
Comment [T1]: This last sentence of the introduction presents the students’ ARGUMENT. We can think of the ARGUMENT as the students particular ANSWER to the question being posed. Your lecturers will be appreciative of any essay that has a clearly stated argument. Comment [T2]: This is an example of a SUB-HEADING. Subheadings help to show the structure of your essay. However, they should be used fairly sparingly in essay writing.

Background to social networking The idea of a ‘social network’ is not new. A social network in fact refers to any structure made up of

You may find that it is not necessary to use sources so abundantly in assignments you are set to do. Keep in mind though that evidence of wide reading is something that your lecturers will always appreciate in your work. 6 Huffington Post 2011 ‘Egypt 's Facebook Revolution: Wael Ghonim Thanks the Social Network’, viewed 29 August 2011, . The author illustrates in her blog the power and impact Facebook had on the population by convincing to be “a place of human connectivity,” but states her idea of Facebook missing its real reason of enriching human connectivity. Mathias goes on how Facebook became more as an “online community theater” (438) than a functional service tool. She provided examples like people who announce relationships with Chinese food in their status in order to make others laugh instead of providing useful updates. Her argument goes on claiming how Facebook has made us more wary of real human confrontation, and how the network’s audience has become afraid of being caught in the act of avoiding confrontation. Mathias supports this when she uses the example of one of her friends loosing it when she heard of a hacker application for Facebook that would expose who’s been searching who, making everyone know of a love interest she had been “stalking.” Mathias argues how we have managed to fear real interaction by cowering behind online. She concludes stating that Facebook is another form of escapism and make believe, and brings closure hoping on a future where the younger generation stops treating Facebook as a “circus ring” (439).…

Looking at the average Millennial, one would see him toting all his smart devices and would wonder if Millennials are ever disconnected – from technology or from each other. The Millennial Generation, more than any other generation, feels the need to be constantly linked to each other. For young American adults aged 18-32, technology is their life; virtual reality has come to supersede physical reality. In what seems like every second of every day, teenagers can be found on their computers, tablets, and cell phones, searching though pages of social media. In fact, statistics prove that they are: an average teenager has 201 Facebook friends and 73% of teenagers are on at least one social network (Thomas). Across Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter alone it shows how cyber space is endless. According to Social Media Watch, Twitter now boasts that as of May 2, 2013 it has 359 million active users; Facebook still holds the top social media spot with 701 million active users. Thanks to the sizeable growth in online activity, the Millennial Generation has lost touch with interpersonal communication. If not monitored, online social networking will become detrimental to the Millennial generation and following generations’ social and psychological development, as the anonymity of cyber space has been shown to encourage negative behavior, leading to increased feelings of disconnection from others.…

Social networking sites allow you to connect with old friends from high school, family that lives far away, in my case, even in another country as missionaries, friends down the street, coworkers, and just about anyone else you can think of. This can make you feel more connected to the world around you. You can keep up with what everyone is doing and accomplishing in their lives very easily through statuses and pictures posted every day. I have met new family members, whether by marriage or by birth, through Facebook who I otherwise have not had the opportunity to meet. One of my uncles, who recently passed away, had an affair about thirty years ago and did not realize he had a son from that affair until his son decided to find his father. Facebook is the only way I have been able to meet my new found cousin and his family. But when you start looking at the downside of social networking, it can make you wonder if it is really worth the cost. There have been many debates on the issues of using these sites for many years, so there have been quite a few downsides brought to the public’s attention such as health issues like anxiety or depression, lower grades for students of all levels, decreased productivity in the workplace, someone being stalked and so forth. Since there are way too many to cover in this paper, I am going to concentrate on three that I feel are some of the most important issues. Some of the issues with social networking sites are identity theft made easier, cyber bullying, which has caused many suicides, and strong face-to-face relationships suffering and being replaced by weaker online relationships.…

Technology has evolved into this great thing where, one all can keep in touch with family members or high school friends from the past or the present. I have used some of these social networks to keep in touch with my own family members and peers. It’s simple, one basically goes to the site of the social network sign-up, become a member, and then find endless possibilities either meeting new friends, or finding old ones, or just playing games. The only difference is that a person has all of this at one’s fingertips. “What is new is the distance we now have from other people, this tendency to objectify them.” (Pitts, 2010, p. 8A) No longer does one have to get out the paper and pen and mail a letter; now an individual can just simply “chat” when friends are on-line or leave them a message for the next time that they do log on. It’s all made very simple for people; it’s not geared towards any age range; it’s free game for all.…

Questions have been raised about the social impact of widespread use of social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter. Do these technologies isolate people and truncate their relationships? Or are there benefits associated with being connected to others in this way? The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project decided to examine SNS in a survey that explored people’s overall social networks and how use of these technologies is related to trust, tolerance, social support, and community and political engagement. The findings presented here paint a rich and complex picture of the role that digital technology plays in people’s social worlds. Wherever possible, we seek to disentangle whether people’s varying social behaviors and attitudes are related to the different ways they use social networking sites, or to other relevant demographic characteristics, such as age, gender and social class.…

Good Morning ladies and gentlemen, we are here today to discuss ‘Are social networking sites doing us any good?’ What baffles me is exactly why we need a discussion on the topic. I see the good all around me, don’t you? I see it in the increasing literacy rates, which according to the National Literacy Trust, are directly co-related to children’s engagement with social media. I see it in the cultural convergence that the entire world is experiencing today. But most of all, I see it in the smile on my mother’s face, when she is busy messaging her school friends on facebook, whom she has found after 27 long years.…
