Social Media and its Impact on Social Behavior
Introduction
Social media has drastically changed how people communicate. How many people remember how it feels to hear the phone ring in the house or receive a letter in the mail? Today’s youth know nothing other than text messages, tweets, and Facebook. Social media and the social entertaining websites of today have affected social behavior in many ways. While there are many advantages to this technological advancement, these advancements can also result in many changes in social behaviors. Some of the few prominent changes in social behavior, due to social media, are lack of communication skills, changes in self-esteem and cyber bullying. Social media is having a huge impact on an individual’s social behavior; strict rules should be implemented to help develop a healthier self-perception and confidence in our young generation.
Communication Skills
According to the article, Teens and Social Media, “Only 29% of teens spend time with friends in person doing social activities outside of school” (Lenhart, 2009). Many teenagers today lack the essential social skills that are necessary for college or eventually the working world. Communication through electronic media such as text message and email takes away from communication skills. Most individuals are using electronic communication instead of face to face communication. According to the article, How Social Media is Affecting the Way We Speak and Write, “There are a lot of public speakers who have been sent into tailspins trying to adjust to speaking to an audience whose faces are obstructed by their laptops or who are so busy on their phones that the speaker can only see the tops of their heads, instead of their eyes and face” (Sherman, 2010). This shows that society is becoming disconnected from reality and is lost in the distractions of electronic communication and social media.

Social media has corrupted our communication amplifying the fact that as a society people spend more time online than with our families. Social media has taken over society, people are more focused on what all the fake news is about, or who did what this weekend, than spending time with their children, teenagers, and loved ones. “16 year old boy-’ Some day, but certainly not now I’d like to learn how to have a conversation,’” (Turkle). It has come to the fact that parents and people are on social media so much that teens are confronting the problem. This 16 year old boy from Turkle’s article has exemplified this claim. Teens do not have a concept of good communication, because the people they look up to can’t hold a conversation with them…

Not only does it affect health, social media deprives parents from having a thorough conversation with their children without them checking their phone. Even though the positive effect of having a social media profile is to communicate with friends/family, but it is also effecting friendly environment of families because children do not even bother what is going around when they are too busy tweeting about it. The definition of social media is “the relationships that exist between network of people” (Walter & Riviera, 2004). In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically. Thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites (Oberst, 2010). Schill (2011) states that the social media sites encourage negative behaviors for teen students such as procrastination (catching up with friends), and they are more likely to drink and drug. However, every day, many students are spending countless hours immersed in social media, such as Facebook, MySpace, World of Warcraft, or Sim City. At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens…

Just in the month of July in 2012, people spent an overall average of 121.1 billion minutes on social media sites (ProCon) and every year this number grows bigger. Social media takes up a tremendous amount of time in peoples day to day lives. It has been estimated that 22% of teenagers log onto Facebook every day, at least once (ProCon). This greatly takes away from time that could be used for more productive things, other than social media. Many relationships have been compromised whether it is friendship, partnership or work related, in direct correlation to social media. Due to the increased popularity of online interaction, face to face interaction is becoming rare. Without face to face social interaction people cannot develop necessary social skills, which were once strongly instilled into society. The computer screen is considered a barrier between people’s emotions. It is very common for people to say things through media as an alternate way of confrontation. Many things people say online they would not say to someone in person. The computer screen provides a shield from having to “deal” with issues face to face. This may seem like an easy escape goat, but in the end ends up causing more issues. It is a proven fact that people who use social media tend to experience feelings of loneliness and exile. Studies have shown that children may…

The journal "The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families." defines social media as “any website that allows social interaction, including social networking”(O’Keeffe n.p). This journal explains how predications can help families understand the websites and suggests ways to monitor their children. The journal illuminates some good aspects of social media, such as opportunities for community engagement, enhancement of individual and collective creativity, and fostering one’s identity of social skills. Some social media programs create learning opportunities. However the journal articulates the bad side to social media, as the journal explains it opens up opportunities for cyber bullying, and life-threatening privacy concerns. This journal provides the reader with knowledge of both sides of the social media argument and is a very good resource. The authors of the journal are actual pediatricians who can provide in depth factual knowledge and experience. Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, and Kathleen Clarke-Pearson are pediatricians whose journal provides information on both sides of the social-media argument based on their backgrounds.…

Engaging in various forms of social media is a routine activity that research has shown to benefit children and adolescents by enhancing communication, social connection, and even technical skills. Social media sites such as Facebook and MySpace offer multiple daily opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interests. During the last 5 years, the number of preadolescents and adolescents using such sites has increased dramatically. Since a large part of this generation’s social and emotional development is occurring while on the Internet and on cell phones, children and adolescents are at some risk as they navigate and experiment with social media, because of their limited capacity for self-regulation and susceptibility to peer pressure. Recent research indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviors, such as bullying, and sexual experimentation, that have introduced problems such as cyber-bullying, privacy issues, and sexting.…

It is amazing how the Internet is changing people 's lives. People are able to quickly do research and gather data on the web, navigate through websites, and most people are able to find anything on the Internet in a matter of seconds thanks to search engines like Google. The Internet has provided our world with a different means of communication and is accessible to anyone at any time at a click of a mouse. Despite all the beneficial aspects of the uses of the Internet, as users of social media increase, so does the debate of whether it gives good influences to individuals. Social media, however, has a negative aspect due to the fact that it affects relationships with others, people easily get distracted, and it may cause cyber bullying.…
