Social networking sites allow you to connect with old friends from high school, family that lives far away, in my case, even in another country as missionaries, friends down the street, coworkers, and just about anyone else you can think of. This can make you feel more connected to the world around you. You can keep up with what everyone is doing and accomplishing in their lives very easily through statuses and pictures posted every day. I have met new family members, whether by marriage or by birth, through Facebook who I otherwise have not had the opportunity to meet. One of my uncles, who recently passed away, had an affair about thirty years ago and did not realize he had a son from that affair until his son decided to find his father. Facebook is the only way I have been able to meet my new found cousin and his family. But when you start looking at the downside of social networking, it can make you wonder if it is really worth the cost. There have been many debates on the issues of using these sites for many years, so there have been quite a few downsides brought to the public’s attention such as health issues like anxiety or depression, lower grades for students of all levels, decreased productivity in the workplace, someone being stalked and so forth. Since there are way too many to cover in this paper, I am going to concentrate on three that I feel are some of the most important issues. Some of the issues with social networking sites are identity theft made easier, cyber bullying, which has caused many suicides, and strong face-to-face relationships suffering and being replaced by weaker online relationships.…

Social media is the means in which people interact amongst others through creating, sharing and exchanging information and ideas on virtual communities or networks. The fact that social media is all around us, it makes our everyday lives easier and more convenient. The downside of having too much social media in our daily lives is that it interferes with the social development of our society. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter allows its users to exchange thoughts and have online conversations with people they may have never met before. Our society uses such websites to have conversations with one another that maybe critical or rather personal; which leaves people being unable to have a real conversation face to face. These types of online interactions weaken our social skills and may in fact harm the intelligence of the future generation. Although, social media is a huge factor in our current society, it does not have to represent who we are as individuals. Therefore, social media hinders the development of social skills because it diminishes the authenticity of intimate conversations, it weakens basic verbal skills and it causes internet addiction.…

Over one billion people around the world use social media. It has become so big and out of control that it has taken over the early 20th century and will continue to negatively impact the communication of generations to come. Social media is ruining the way society defines friendship. A friendship is a relationship with a person whom one knows, likes, and trusts. But Bradley Shear defines a "Facebook Friend" as someone with whom you may or may not have ever met or interacted with other than requesting that he or she be added to your network or that you confirmed that he or she be added to your network. Facebook recently reported that most users who have hundreds of friends in reality only really interact with between five to ten percent of their Facebook buddies. Social Media also continues to dismantle our ability to have relationships with one another by simply giving us the satisfaction of being “connected”. Social media has become so overwhelmingly big that it has put our safety at risk, it continues to distract us from important every day tasks and causes huge issues with our social skills not only on a personal level but also in society as a whole.…
