Social Marketing Intervention Plan for Singapore Casino Gambling
Introduction
Singapore is among the fastest growing economies in the world. The country has diversified its revenue sources in order to expand its economy. The country in 2010 launched
Integrated Resorts that would serve as tourist destination and attraction sites. These two resorts that are equipped with several modern facilities are: Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World
Sentosa (Shi, 2013; Mazza, 2013). Among the many facilities, the resorts have gaming and
Casino Gambling facilities. The two Casinos at the two resorts have had positive contributions to
Singapore’s economy since their launch. Casino Gambling however have impacted negatively on the society. Casino Gambling is considered to very addictive and some even argues that it destroys the social fabrics in a society (Kae and De, 2012). According to Ng (2011), casino gambling since the inception of two resort centers has taken shape in Singapore.
Gambling is a legal activity that has economic value and pumps money through taxes into the economy (Tse, Hong and Ng, 2013; Case, 2011). Casinos also offer employment to many people making it even more beneficial in an economy. The government is blinded by everything for the simple reason that more addiction among gamblers drives more profits in terms of taxes for the government. It is the responsibility of businesses to be socially responsible and has activities that in anyway can degrade the moral values, beliefs and behaviors of people. Access to casino gambling as much as it is beneficial, has several risks in the society. The most notable of all the effects is destruction of relationships. The society is made of bonds that bound people together and make them work together. Gambling however is a threat to these bonds in that

addicts tend to avoid people they are related with. This effect is immense and is a major threat to societal growth and development.

    The expansion of legalized gambling poses a number of issues for policymakers. Two related issues, which have not been dealt with extensively from a public policy perspective, are examined in this commentary: state responsibility for addressing pathological and problem gambling, and the legal status and regulation of Internet gambling. A review of the recommendations of the 1998 National Gambling Impact Study Commission on pathological and problem gambling as well as state policies and practices indicates that little has been accomplished in dealing with the need for education, prevention, and treatment. Confusing and contradictory legislation and policies abound. Internet gambling flourishes, and federal and state governments are ambivalent about legalizing it. Both problem gambling and regulation of Internet gambling urgently need attention. The legalization and regulation of commercial gambling involves a wide range of public policy issues. These include such matters as how jurisdictions decide to legalize gambling in the first place, and what forms of gambling to legalize (e.g., lotteries, casinos, pari-mutuel racing, bingo). Another policy issue faced by jurisdictions that already have some form of legal gambling is the decision of whether or not to expand existing forms or add new ones. Once gambling has been legalized, jurisdictions face the issue of how to regulate it. For gambling businesses to succeed, gamblers need to be confident that the games are honest and that they will be paid if they win. One role of regulatory agencies is to ensure that gambling activities occur in such a manner that these conditions are met. Decisions about all these matters are made in a highly politicized environment and are shaped by a variety of competitive forces.
