What is Social Intelligence (SI)?
Social Intelligence (SI) is the ability to get along well with others, and to get them to cooperate with you. Sometimes referred to simplistically as "people skills," SI includes an awareness of situations and the social dynamics that govern them, and a knowledge of interaction styles and strategies that can help a person achieve his or her objectives in dealing with others. It also involves a certain amount of self-insight and a consciousness of one's own perceptions and reaction patterns.
From the standpoint of interpersonal skills, Karl Albrecht classifies behavior toward others as falling somewhere on a spectrum between "toxic" effect and "nourishing" effect. Toxic behavior makes people feel devalued, angry, frustrated, guilty or otherwise inadequate. Nourishing behavior makes people feel valued, respected, affirmed, encouraged or competent. A continued pattern of toxic behavior indicates a low level of social intelligence - the inability to connect with people and influence them effectively. A continued pattern of nourishing behavior tends to make a person much more effective in dealing with others; nourishing behaviors are the indicators of high social intelligence.
Is SI a part of personality?
No. SI is one of a cluster of "intelligences," according to the theory of multiple intelligences advanced by Professor Howard Gardner of Harvard University. Gardner's "MI" theory has become widely accepted in recent years, particularly in the area of public education.
The old idea that a person's potential in life can be measured and predicted by a single number - his or her "IQ" score - has lost a great deal of credibility during the last decade or so.     In A Rounded Version: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Howard Gardner introduces the idea of seven different intelligences, combating the idea of contemporary intelligence. Gardner defines the contemporary view of intelligence as, an individual 's intelligence test score based on his or her age with no regard to experience or training. In his words, "It is an inborn attribute or faculty of the individual." Gardner defines MI as a multiplication of the contemporary view, but with added emphasis on an individual 's ability to problem solve, or create a solution to a problem. Gardner 's 7 MI 's are Linguistic, logical, Mathematical, Spatial, Musical, Bodily Kinesthetic, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal. Each MI is paired with an example of an individual who displays in abundance the specific intelligence being discussed. Gardner discusses the idea that most intelligence 's are paired. In other words, a professional football athlete would most likely (in addition to his Bodily Kinesthetic ability) have Spatial intelligence allowing him to be aware of the opponents and team members around him. Gardner 's main reason to choose the intelligences he and his team did, in his words was, "We have begun with the problems that humans solve and worked back to the "intelligences" that must be responsible."     Intelligence is an intrapersonal phenomenon, that is inside a person and it is generally agreed that the nature of this energy is unknown. Nevertheless, it may be known by its mental products (Groth-Marnet, 1997; Wechsler, 1939). Because there are many different ways to be intelligent there have also been many different definitions proposed (see Neiser, et al., 1996 for summary). A consensus on what constitutes intelligence is generally lacking. Alfred Binet (1908), the author of one of the first modern intelligence tests, defined intelligence as the inclination to take and maintain a specific direction, and capacity to adapt to achieve a goal outcome, and the power of autocriticism (Kaplan, & Saccuzzo, 2005). In contrast, David Wechsler, the developer of the Wechsler scales, defined intelligence as the aggregate capacity to act purposefully, think rationally, and deal effectively with the environment (Wechsler, 1958 as cited in Kaplin, & Saccuzzo).     The beginning of the school year is possibly one of the most stressful experiences for a student to endure due to mandatory placement testing—ultimately deciding where and what level a student belongs to based upon their test scores. However, what if a student does not do well on the placement testing because the subjects that the educational system deem ‘intelligent’ are not the student’s strongest attribute? Based upon the low score, the educational system would declare that student to be unintelligent. But is that student really unintelligent?     Standardized test scores and grade point average have often been used as measures of academic intelligence, and predictors of educational achievement, job performance, and income. IQ or individual quotient testing was developed in the early 1900s as a means to quantifiably measure intelligence. Many individuals who achieved extraordinarily high IQ scores performed miserably in academics; however, they are successful in their respective fields including Albert Einstein (IQ of 160) and Madonna (IQ of 140).     In 1983 a professor of education at Harvard University, Dr. Howard Gardner, developed the theory of multiple intelligences. This theory states that there are eight different ways in which a person is intelligent. These different forms of intelligence are as follows: linguistic, or word smart; logical-mathematic, or reasoning/numbers smart; spatial, or picture smart; bodily-kinesthetic, or body smart; musical, or music smart; intrapersonal, or self-smart; and naturalist, or nature smart (“Multiple Intelligences” para. 1-2). It is not difficult to pinpoint which of these intelligences standardized testing primarily measures. For students who are not linguistically or mathematically gifted, the tests do not accurately show the students’ intelligence. According to a study completed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and Brown University, an improvement in standardized test scores only improves one type of intelligence. This intelligence, ‘crystallized intelligence’*, is a memory based ability, meaning that while these improvements in test scores show an increase in the ability to remember facts, it does not display an increase in “fluid intelligence”, or the ability to use logic and reasoning (Bidwell para. 1-5).
