Social Information Processing Theory: Engaging In Abusive Behavior
The Social Information Processing Theory states that a parent’s cognitive process may affect their choice to engage in abusive behavior. An online study explored this theory to test whether the cognitive process truly influenced potential abusive behavior and strict disciplinary styles between a parent and a child. It also collected data regarding parent’s personal characteristics, stress coping styles, anger control/management, and child developmental norms with abuse. There is a cognitive four-stage process prior to all parents decision concerning the discipline of their child and how it should be carried out.     In an unhealthy family setting parents could be emotionally or physically abusive to their children or one another, neglect their children, or raise their children in an inhabitable location. Unfortunately, this can negatively affect a child’s development. For example, uninvolved parents show no interest in their children, and display indifference and rejecting behavior. They are emotionally detached from their children and often view their parenting role as merely providing the essentials – food, clothing, shelter (Feldman, 2014, p. 253). As a result of uninvolved parenting, the cognitive, emotional, and psychology development of these children is significantly impeded. Child abuse can occur in any household, but it is more common in families living in stressful environments such as poverty and single parenthood. Physically abused children are anxious, resistant to control, suffer from headaches more frequently than other children, and also portray signs of developmental delay (Feldman, 2014, p. 255).     Bandura’s Social Learning Theory suggests that acts of aggression are learnt through the observation of role models. His original “Bobo Doll” study showed that when exposed to aggressive behaviour small children copied this behaviour, not just by being physically aggressive but even copying the verbally aggressive behaviour. However this study focuses on children who are supposed to learn in this manner, this doesn’t demonstrate that this would also be true in older children or adults who already have a set moral compass that would interfere with copying aggressive behaviours. However Bandura’s later study showed that if children saw someone get punished for aggressive behaviour they were less likely to be aggressive themselves when they were allowed to play with the bobo doll but if they saw someone get rewarded for this aggressive behaviour then they were much more likely to act aggressively themselves, this shows that vicarious reinforcement is important to the learning of aggression through the social learning theory, as receiving direct positive reinforcement leads to people having high self efficacy making them very likely to repeat the aggressive behaviour that they were rewarded for. In terms of aggression this reward could come in many forms such as acceptance from a violent gang they want to be a part of or just attention from a parent or teacher. Moreover, Walter and Thomas' study in 1963 further supported this theory as the results of the study demonstrated that aggressive behaviour was a result of imitation of role models. However, the social learning theory does not explain what triggers aggression.     Domestic violence can be defined as the systematic abuse by one person in an intimate relationship in order to control and dominate the partner (Berns, 2013. Pg. 237). A child who suffers from the personality altering traits of these acts becomes a burden and an abnormal member of society. Domestic violence is found in all socioeconomic cultures (Berns, 2013. Pg. 236)Socialization is the process by which individuals acquire the knowledge, skills and character traits that enable them to participate as effective members of groups and society(Berns, 2013. Pg.6). When the process of socialization is disturbed a child cannot grow to their full potential, and this is also known as child neglect.
