THE NATURE OF GROUPS
GROUP -is one of the important concerns of sociological inquiry. -is composed of two or more persons who have something in common, are interacting with each other and are guided by a set of norms. * Eshelman and Cashion (1985) – averred that social interaction or interpersonal behavior of group members is an important criterion in a group. * Homans (1974) – a collection of two or more persons who are in social interaction. * Macionis (2003) – as one or more people who identify and interact with one another. * Cole (1963) – is a unit of interacting personalities with an interdependence of roles & statuses existing between the members. * Donald Light (1985) – as a set of individuals who identify & interact with one another.
SOCIAL GROUP –any system of social relationship in which members have a culture (Persell, 1984) -unit of interacting personalities with interdependence of roles. -a collection of people who interact with each other with the position they occupy in society. -organization of people where individual members are aware that they belong to it(Salcedo, 2002)
CHARACTERISTICS OF GROUPS
1. Group members interact with each other over a period of time.
2. Each member identifies with the group & is recognized as part of the other members.
3. Each member is expected to accept responsibilities & duties & abide by certain norms.
4. Members allow specialization in carrying out performances of their respective roles.
IMPORTANCE OF GROUPS
1. Group is a transmitter of culture.
2. Group is a means of social control.
3. Group socializes the individual.
4. Group is the source of fundamental ideas.
5. Group trains the individual in communications.
