SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY OF GENDER DEVELOPMENT AND DIFFERENTIATION

Abstract Human differentiation on the basis of gender is a fundamental phenomenon that affects virtually every aspect of people’s daily lives. This article presents the social cognitive theory of gender-role development and functioning. It specifies how gender conceptions are constructed from the complex mix of experiences and how they operate in concert with motivational and self-regulatory mechanisms to guide gender-linked conduct throughout the life course. The theory integrates psychological and sociostructural determinants within a unified conceptual structure. In this theoretical perspective, gender conceptions and roles are the product of a broad network of social influences operating interdependently in a variety of societal subsystems. Human evolution provides bodily structures and biological potentialities that permit a range of possibilities rather than dictate a fixed type of gender differentiation. People contribute to their self-development and bring about social changes that define and structure gender relationships through their agentic actions within the interrelated systems of influence.

SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY OF GENDER DEVELOPMENT The present article addresses the psychosocial determinants and mechanisms by which society socializes male and female infants into masculine and feminine adults. Gender development is a fundamental issue because some of the most important aspects of people’s lives, such as the talents they cultivate, the conceptions they hold of themselves and others, the sociostructural opportunities and constraints they encounter, and the social life and occupational paths they pursue are heavily prescribed by societal gender-typing.     In today’s culture gender stereotypes and biases are created on the daily and children learn to adopt their gender roles based on these stereotypes. As children grow up they are exposed to factors that have major influences on their behaviors regarding their gender roles.     The development of gender awareness is fundamental for our sense of self and is also predominant in any assessment made of another person as from birth on people respond differently to males and females. Gender identity can be seen as one of the earliest social categories that children learn to apply to both themselves and other people. This is suggested in Schaffer’s (1996) definition where gender identity is the correct labeling of self and others as male or female. There are three main theories that have been explored which all suggest multiple ways in which gender awareness is developed: Bandura, Kohlberg and the Gender Scheme Theory. Firstly, Bandura (1977) notes that the idea that social influences clearly plays a very significant role in the development of gender identity. Socialization makes children aware that there are differences between male and female, and that these sex differences matter. These social pressures also suggest there are specific genders stereotypes that they are expected to conform to. Nevertheless, it can also be seen that biological and cultural changes interact with these social factors, thus defining how an individual eventually develops the gender identity of a man or a woman. An alternative theory, expressed by Kohlberg (1966), suggests that children are not the recipients of any physical information from social experiences and therefore they search for specific regulations which will explain the way in which males and females are expected to behave. In addition, gender tends to be the first thing a parent wishes to find about their child. It can be suggested that from then on the child will be treated depending on the fact that they are male or female.     As early as 18 months of age, children begin to gain an understanding of gender stereotypes. Through gender labeling, children are commonly exposed to messages like, “big boys don’t cry,” “what a cute girl,” or “what a strong little man” (Bussey & Bandura, 1999). Males and females are held to gender-typed expectations regarding personality traits, abilities, activities, and roles. According to these gender stereotypes males are considered to possess such traits as toughness, aggressiveness and dominance, whereas females are regarded as sympathetic, gentle and dependent (Berk & Berk, 2009). Social expectations about gender in the U.S. portray men as possessing active-instrumental traits like competitiveness and dominance while woman are portrayed as having nurturing-expressive traits such as sensitivity and compassion. Until the 1970’s it was a common belief that men were expected to be the primary income producers of the family while women were expected to be the primary caregivers (Gerber, 2009). These differential beliefs may also impact a child’s identity from an academic standpoint as activities such as reading, spelling, art and music are considered to be feminine, where mathematics, athletics, science and mechanical skills are considered to be more masculine (Berk & Berk). After acquiring an understanding of the gender-typed expectations in a given culture, this understanding strengthens in degree and in complexity as the child develops (Powlishta et al., 2001). Although it is common for young children to initially present as rigid in their beliefs and endorse these gender stereotypes, as they age they begin to show some flexibility in their views.
