Lecture 2
Learning Objectives
1. To develop a better appreciation of how much we rely on electronic technology
2. To implicate today’s actions in the technology of the future

- All of us are users of tech
- All of us have benefited from tech in one way or another
- All of us have been frustrated with technology
- We attempt to understand the critical ways that technology shapes our social reality
Inattentional Blindness
- Ex. From video are we digital dummies…the clown biking around campus and many of the students were too busy with their phones to pay attention
- We think we’re paying attention, imagine ourselves paying attention…but we’re not
- There’s a disjuncture between us thinking we’re paying attention and imagining that creates the problem
How does technology shape our social reality?
- The messaging (advertising we’re exposed to) that surrounds our use of tech in our popular society
- Everyone wants to be using the latest technology
- Tremendous amount of pressure put on us to be users of technology
- Little space for us to question or challenge the use of technology in our lives
- Rather we’re made to think that we don’t have a choice and that we have to accept it
- If we don’t accept and we’re not successful like we’re expected to be as users of technology then we blame ourselves and there is something wrong with us
- Technology is not a force of nature, it is made by humans for humans
- It is created, marketed, and as consumers of technology we need to adapt to it
4 reasons why it’s useful to ask questions about the role of technology in our society
1. To challenge our complacency about technology o It’s not a forced committed o Complacency = uncritical acceptance
2. To improve its usefulness o Asking questions allows us to see the things that can be improved in the technology
3. To enhance our awareness of how we use and rely upon technology
4. To get our heads outside of the box of popular messaging about technology

In life, men and women tend to miss things that are not obvious because our mind is focus on expectation of what we think and what we expect to see. Expectation is a barrier that keep us from seeing beyond and being aware of the things that are the most important. In the essay, “ This is water ” by David Foster Wallace and “ Seeing” by Annie Dillard , we see that we have to learn what to think and how to think. If we choose to open our mind and noticing the unexpected, it will lead to happiness and clarity, but being small-minded and focusing on expectations will affect the way we see the world by keeping us from seeing beyond and being happy.…

Ever since the advent of the modern digital culture, there have been some heated discussions on the topic of whether technology is a foe or a friend. Some people argue that it is influencing us negatively, scattering our attention and diffusing our concentration, while others believe otherwise, suggesting that it is making our lives more efficient and convenient. The emergence of such technology not only enhances some of our fundamental cognitive abilities, but also enables us to explore more of what is we are truly interested in.…

A number of crash incidents take place on a monthly basis just due to distracted drivers. The addiction to viewing Smartphone screen every now and then has been blamed for such incidents. The distracted drivers suffer from “inattention blindness”; that’s what the psychologist would like to call it. “If we can control and polish our powers of attention, then the real question before us in this confounding, fascinating digital age won 't be "who are we?", as much as "who do we want to be?"” (Jackson 1) I am mostly in agreement with this statement because with proper control we are able to enhance our mental abilities which thus grants us a better choice and imposed on us by this confounding and alluring digital age. Then again, that is personal opinion that I have formed over the years while pondering over this age-old debate of whether technology has been a helpful and positive influence or a curse that we have brought upon ourselves.…

Our habitual thoughts constitute most of what moves through our minds. The continuous entertaining of these thoughts creates a vibration. It is this vibration which creates what we experience as the circumstances of our lives. It seems to be the other way around. That is, we think we feel a certain way because of our experiences. Situations we encounter seem to be happening to us or caused by others or larger forces. However, the truth is that it is our vibration that creates the circumstances we experience. Or, at the very least, our perception of the circumstances we experience. Often times, we are cultivating thoughts or engaging in thought patterns quite unconsciously. We are generally unaware of what’s really making us feel the way we are feeling. As a result, we feel justified in blaming the outside world when we don’t like what we are feeling. These thoughts arise in us from the conditioning, which formed early on and continues to imprint until we become conscious of it. Making a change is really not so simple until we become aware of the beliefs we have that are causing our world to seem as it is.…
