From 1880-1906, western farmers were affected by multiple issues that they saw as threats to their way of life. The main threats to the farmers were railroads, trusts, and the government, because these institutions all had the power to drastically affect the ability of the farmers to make profits. Therefore, the farmers were not wrong to feel frustration toward those institutions when the institutions caused the farmers to live lives of increasingly extreme poverty.…

“We've transformed agriculture into something that needs far less labor and a lot more capital and technology, and a lot of people have been displaced as a result,” says John Cromartie, a population researcher at the USDA. “In a sense, the Great Plains is a victim of its own success, because…

In the book, Hallowing Out the Middle, Carr and Kefalas attempt to understand the process of the rural brain by categorizing and studying the trajectories of four groups of young adults in “Ellis”, Iowa. The way the authors categorize people in this book is not appealing to me as a reader. In the preface, the authors stated that, “We are not experts on rural American, small towns, or regional development. In fact, in our combined professional lives, we have spent all our time…on urban issues and problems” (9). With this statement being one of the first things you read, it shows that the authors have no ethos. It’s difficult to drop into a town for a year and come away with a deep understanding with what you’ve encountered. They do bring in…

Although these religions are in constant dispute with one another, they have more in common than most people know about. Both of these religions trace the genealogy of their beliefs, and the foundation of their beliefs back to Abraham. He is their physical common denominator. Both Judaism and Christianity tell the story of Abraham. During a time when the majority of society was worshipping many gods, Abraham believed that he had heard the voice of the one true living God; who call Abraham to worship Him and Him alone. That is why Abraham is considered by theologians and scholars in Judaism and Christianity to be the father of monotheism; thus the next common denominator between the two religions, the belief in one true and more importantly living God. According to http://www.essortment.com/all/callabraham_rssf.htm Abraham was 75 when he first heard the voice of God. According to www.jewfaq.org/origins.htm he was born in 1800 BC, if there information is correct this would roughly place the start of monotheism at about 1725…

The focus of this paper was originally threefold. I wanted to synthesize my thoughts on California’s inhuman style of agriculture, corporate (agribusiness) welfare, and America’s pandering do-nothing congress OF the special interests, BY the special interests, and FOR the special interests. I intended to intersperse discussions of these topics with many historical agriculture/legislation facts and events. Unfortunately my research time was greatly curtailed by my need to find employment ASAP this summer (student financial aid eligibility expired two quarters early from taking too many courses and now I’ve maxed out a handful of credit cards). So I found myself unable to complete this paper as intended……
