Snowball As A Scapegoat In Hong Kong
I selected this article because it explains how China uses a group of students as a scapegoat, similar to how Napoleon uses Snowball as a scapegoat. I thought it was interesting how Animal Farm and this article compare and contrast.
This article describes how Hong Kong, a former British colony was returned to Chinese control in 1997 and “placed under a semi-autonomous administration” that many consider to inreality be under Beijing’s control. The author states that “Since the handover, China has violated all of the pledges it made regarding democracy, press freedom, and freedom of expression in the handover agreement with Britain.” In Animal Farm, the Seven Commandments pledged at the beginning of the establishment of Animal Farm were completely broken as Napoleon and the pigs violated the rules. The author goes on to explain that a group of students at Hong Kong University have organized a pro-independence party, the Hong Kong National Party. The Chinese have responded ruthlessly, threatening to charge students with treason and suggesting that the party is part of an effort by “international hostile forces” whose goal is “toppling …show more content…
I have come to the conclusion that people conspire against one another in order to hide their own guilt. I realize that people blame each other in life every day, and see it happening all around me.
The article and Animal Farm suggests that society, which functions of power, should not have cause for insecurities. The author labels China’s reaction to the student group as an overreaction and states that no truly great power should ever have cause for such overreaction. The same could be said of Napoleon in Animal Farm. If he was really the amazing leader he made himself to be, he would not have felt the need to create tales with the purpose of making the animals fearful, or blame
