The “Rechartering of the Feminine Space” inspects the results of a father’s lack on an individual’s development. Abandonment at a young age hints to internal refusal and conceded worth, concluding in a rotation of “a lack of self assertion”. Subsequently Victor’s scar has been wreaked, causing him to not be able to acknowledge or deal with agony triggered by his father. Internalizing all his emotions, he relives his pain daily, gaining strength in anger and lashing out in potential relationships. The film “Smoke Signal” has the power to transforms ones political sensibilities because of Victor’s “father wound” over the symbolism of the fire and the position of recurrences in the storyline. Described as “bring your own fireworks” party, the audience is immediately forced to watch the Fourth of July fire. It is believed to be a trigger for festivity converted for every Indian wishing to take part. Allegorically, the family and home are burned alive and every Indian in the world was there to watch. Many Indians took part unknowingly as well, since the fire wittingly began in the dark, while everyone happened to be asleep. Time passes and the wind knocks at the flames, but nature does not have the ability put out this man-made fire. Two generations, embodying those who came before and those who came after the fire, shriek to the night of equal loss as the generation of parents and their children in between is consumed. The fire crazes all night as long as the dark continues, and the level of the disaster is only familiar by the morning light. The storyteller finishes the scene with a grouping of all “pillars of fame” into “children born of flame” or “pillars of ash.” Victor burns everything he touches” after he is forged in that flame. As a child, his rage and contempt grow while his father still lives with him. He dons a white shirt rimmed in fire red at the neck as his anger builds. A burning wound on his face

Smoke Signals is the story of two Native Americans, named Thomas and Victor, who grew up together and go off on an adventure to find who they really are. Thomas is young and lives with his grandmother, because his parents died in a fire when he was a baby; as we later find out, Victor’s father Arnold started the fire. Thomas lives by the morals and ethics of a traditional Native American, following the beliefs and telling stories. Victor is a mean and cold person on the outside, but emotionally distressed about his father and his childhood on the inside. Victor is always being rude to Thomas and easily annoyed by his storytelling. Thomas tells stories of Arnold, Victor’s father, which Victor hates because of the history he has and how he hates his father, but throughout their journey feelings change and Thomas and Victor become closer than ever. The story for both the movie and the short story start the same, Arnold had started a fire on a July 4th when Victor and Thomas were babies, and Thomas’s parents died but they threw Thomas out the window and Arnold caught him.…

While watching the movie Smoke Signals, it can be readily observed that the story is driven not only through the adventures of the two main protagonists; Thomas Builds-the-Fire and Victor Joseph, but also through the words and histories spoken by Thomas, who is a practicer of the spoken word, or oral traditions of Native Americans. The oral tradition was used by Native Americans to pass down history, culture, traditions, and their beliefs. The use of storytelling in the film gives the sense of time with the flash forwards and flashbacks. Written by Sherman Alexie and directed by Chris Eyre, Thomas and childhood friend Victor, go from bickering pals to having a great respect for one another. At first glance, this movie appears to be a road trip movie, but then Alexie does much more than follow the archetype of the genre. When the two boys were just babies, Thomas’ parents were killed in a fire that was accidentally started by Victor’s father Arnold. Although Arnold failed to tell anyone of this deed, he did try to overcome his sins by saving the two boys’ life. Thomas does not forget this and holds Arnold in high revere. Thomas, having been raised by his grandmother, only knows a two parent family by proxy, through Victor. Victor holds a high level of resentment for his own father, both for leaving him and his family, causing him and his mother great despair. He and Thomas go from their home Coeur d 'Alene Indian Reservation, after…

When Jack and his hunters fail to continue the fire, Ralph calls an emergency meeting and stresses the importance of the fire by saying, “The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going...Don't you understand? Can't you see we ought to - ought to die before we let the fire out?" (86). Ralph and very few others are the only ones who seem to care about the fire and returning to civilization. The act of letting the signal fire out is highly symbolic of the boys’ rejection of society; Jack’s hunters care more for satisfying their blood instinct than they do for rescue. Even Ralph, who was determined to keep the fire going and get rescued, starts to lose hope; when talking to Piggy, Ralph says, “We can’t keep one fire going. And they don’t care...What’s more, I don’t sometimes” (153). When removed from society, it’s evident through this quote that even the best of people can lose interest in returning to a civilized society as they resort to savagery. The boys’ lack of use of the symbolic signal fire on this isolated location evidently shows the struggles between individual desires and rules of a civilized…

Fire demonstrates its power by turning civilized or savage depending on the character who controls it. Ralph, for example, is constantly exercising the better side of human nature in emphesizing rescue and civilization as the two most important things to maintain on the island and therfore fire is able to unite the boys under this notion. Specifically, He is constantly using the fire to remind the boys that “the smoke’s a signal and we can't be rescued if we don’t have smoke (79).” Because of Ralph's ability to exercise that part of himself with use of the fire, that quality is intensified within all the boys, proving that that power will overcome the evil. However, when Jack decides he wants to be the most dominant leader on the island, he steals the fire and in this action means that Jack chooses to accept a much darker side of himself. In the eyes of the boys, Jack is a ‘chief now in truth’ 68 signifying not only that the fire has given him power, but that the evil has won that power and therefore all hope of rescue is lost. Fire exemplifies the theme that humans have both evil and good, civilization and savagery, within them, but the one they choose to accept is the one one which holds the ultimate…

“Compare the dominant readings of the films LA Confidential and Animal Kingdom by examining and analysing the language of each and the audience positioning through the privileging of particular social and cultural values” The studied films LA confidential and Animal kingdom are both texts based on the genre crime fiction, but have very different sub-genre; LA Confidential has a hard boiled theme, and Animal Kingdom uses criminal protagonist genre. However both films present to the audience a position of justifiable homicide, this meaning that, to achieve a human justice homicide is accepted by the audience. This essay will compare the similarities and differences, gender roles, characterization of gender, and attitudes towards violence and how the producer uses language to position the audience in the above topics. Gender roles are prominently represented in the film LA confidential, with the male showed to be dominant over the female, this is show by bud white obsession with protecting a woman in harm by excessive force, this shows that he is the “alpha male” and protects the less dominant female. On the other hand a female is presented as a high class escort (Lynn Bracken) that gets in to trouble and needs a dominant male to help her out. in terms of the love triangle between Bud White, Ed Exley and Lynn Bracken both Ed and Bud treat Lynn as though she is very fragile, almost breakable, showing that the male is dominant. Lynn is the stereotypical women; physically weaker, smaller in size, irresistibly beautiful, she plays this role throughout the entire film. An example of Bud White showing his male dominance and masculinity in the film is on the Christmas scene were Bud white sees a domestic violence between a male and a female, then the male strikes the female. Bud White then knocks on the door to get the wife beaters attention “Who the hell are you” yells the man…

The movie began with the incident of the Thomas’ parents’ death. It was the fourth of July and his parents had a party and everyone was either drunk of asleep. Victor’s father Arnold walked around drunk with a sparkler and threw it in the kitchen. Everything quickly caught on fire and Thomas was thrown out the window where he was caught by Arnold. It quickly fast forwards to where Thomas had grown up to be a skinny, story-telling nerd and Victor a buff Indian. Constant flashbacks of Victor’s childhood are shown during the movie. Victor’s father was an angry drunk and would always beat him and his mother. One day, his mother decided to sober up for him and that was also the same time his father left. Victor then found out that his father had passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, thus began his journey with Thomas and the discovery of why his father really left. On his journey, he met a trailer mate of his dad’s named Suzy, who told him stories that his dad had told her about him. She revealed to him about the innocent mistake his father had made by killing Thomas’ parents in the fire. She also encouraged him to stop being stubborn and try to find something valuable in his father’s trailer. Throughout their journey, Thomas and Victor’s relation hadn’t improved until they got into a car accident in which the white man blames them for the incident. Victor was also charged with assault after the accident, but it was dropped because there wasn’t much of a case. In the end, he found the real reason to why his father left and is thankful for Thomas.…
