Essay 1
Small Wedding, Big Memories I never thought that it would happen this early in our lives. Of course I never thought that my best friend would get pregnant and have a child this early in her life either. We both knew that getting married was a rather big commitment, but she was willing and ready. As her best friend of ten years, I was willing and ready to be by her side and help however I could. As soon as Kalyn told me that she and Colby were planning on getting married I was excited for her, but a little reluctant also. Eighteen was a young age to get married, I was just glad that it wasn’t me in that position. I remember talking about all the planning and how she wanted everything to look, the different flowers and place settings. She had already decided also that their colors would be silver and royal blue and that November 2, 2013 would be their special day. I was just happy they were able to agree on that first detail. It was exciting because what girl doesn’t dream of getting married every day of her life until it happens? Three months. We had all of three months to have everything planned out for their wedding. First things first, we had to get invites made and sent out. Kalyn already knew what she wanted them to look like but we were on a budget here so we decided we would make the invites ourselves instead of paying a butt load to have them made. I mean how hard can it be to make sixty invitations? Well I’ll tell you how hard it is. We had to type up everything first and then figure out how to center it correctly to where it looked flattering on the pre-made cards that she had bought. Then we had to make a trial print to see if the words were where they needed to be. We probably made about 5 trial prints before we finally decided just to leave it where it was. I told her, “it will be fine, no one is going to notice that the words are just a tiny bit off center.” At that

Picture Bride, released in 1995 and directed by Kayo Hatta, tells the story of many women living in Japan who were chosen to be brides by Japanese farm laborers living in Hawaii. The choice of the bride was based on their pictures. In this movie, Riyo wanted to leave Japan because her parents were killed by tuberculosis. She had heard great things about the paradise in Hawaii, and she agreed to be a picture bride. Riyo’s new husband was Matsuji, and based on his picture he seemed to be young, maybe in his twenties. Riyo was disappointed to find out that he had given her an old photo, and he was actually forty-three years old; older than Riyo’s father. Riyo was also disappointed to see her home as a shack. She continually tried to refuse Matsuji as her husband, starting on her wedding day when she wouldn’t allow him to help her off of the wagon, and then when she bit his hand when he tried to consummate the wedding night. She decided to try saving money to return to her aunt in Japan. Since Riyo was a city girl, she was also homesick because the work on the sugar cane plantation was very difficult for her due to her frailness. Riyo became best friends with a Japanese picture bride named Kana, who was also saving up to return to Japan. To help Riyo make more money to save, Kana introduced Riyo to ‘the laundry business’, which involved washing the white folk’s laundry, and delivering it to them. Kana ended up dieing in a fire on the sugar cane plantation when she tried to save her small son. Riyo continued the laundry business, and the story ended with Riyo and Matsuji making love; symbolizing that they were finally husband and wife.…

In The Member of the Wedding, Carson McCullers strictly focuses on the main character, twelve-year-old Frankie Jasmine Addams. This novel outlines the coming of age of Frankie Addams, and shows the evolution of her self-image. Frankie, as any normal preteen with self-esteem issues, continuously doubts herself throughout the story. She feels as if she is a member of nothing in the world, she belongs to nothing, and no one wants her to belong. Although it seems that Frankie has always felt this way, this was the summer that she began to feel she was not a member, and on the last Friday of August, it had all changed. As Frankie continues to struggle with this lost feeling, she takes drastic measures to force herself into belonging in the town where she lived with her father, her housekeeper, and her cousin. These actions include changing her name several times, stealing knives, the mishap with Barney, and the incident with the soldier at The Blue Moon. The only thing that Frankie believes she belongs to is her brother, Jarvis, and his fiancé, Janice, and their wedding. She constantly says, "They are the we of me", and she plans to leave home with them after the wedding in Winter Hill. Frankie Addams continues with her self-conscious thoughts and feelings while she matures and finds her place in the world.…

“It made me realize I didn’t have to be perfect for me to have a purpose in this world. God didn’t make me or anyone else flawless, and from that day on I matured and got wiser, but it wasn’t an automatic switch it happened over the course of a couple months. I stopped caring what others thought of me, and started caring about what I thought of myself, which sounds so cliché, but really does have a meaning to it.” 9 months after that night Lara’s boyfriend gave her a promise ring and now they are expected to get engaged sometime in the near future and she says “I am completely and utterly happy now and no one can take that away from me.”…

Marriage. This had started because of a marriage. Marriage wasn't a foreign concept to Lalette Thelwell, not entirely... She knew that it bound a man and women together, and that once bound... children often filled their home. Boys seemed to the preferred, and husbands expected their wives to provide them with at least one healthy son... but with all the trouble that little boys seemed to get themselves into while playing in the streets, a secret part of Lalette doubted that was what anyone really wanted. Boys were mischief makers and little thieves that slipped their tiny hands into unwary pockets where the little girls only sold pretty flowers... Lalette had read countless stories about love, marriage, and courtship, but she had never considered…
