Slinky Physics
There were two different types of slinkies, medium and large. The medium slinky had a mass of 213.65g and could stretch 46.1m. The large slinky had a mass of 287.95g and could stretch 6.5m. The main objective was to understand the physics of a slinky/spring. It was found through research that the slinky was actually invented by a naval engineer working on suspension for a navy

In order for this equipment to assist one in measuring the speed of sound, the speaker and microphone are positioned inside the hollow tube with the speaker stationary at one end. The microphone is able to be moved and set a chosen distance from the speaker, from almost touching to 1 meter. The signal generator is connected to the speaker by a pair of wires. From this pair of wires, another pair of wires connects the signal generator to the frequency meter. A set of wires also run from the signal generator to the oscilloscope. A separate set of wires is connected from the oscilloscope to the microphone inside the tube. The set up of the equipment allows for the output of the signal meter to be read and measured by the frequency meter while being led to the speaker. This input causes the speaker to vibrate, which produces sound waves inside the tube. These sound waves, picked up by the microphone, are then sent to the oscilloscope as a signal. A pattern is displayed on the screen of the oscilloscope. With the signals in phase, the patterned displayed is a straight diagonal line. With…

Some important past research conducted by other people includes the creator of the project, Annie Lefley. Annie created this project to see how much tension is put on the patellar tendon when grande pile or a demi pile, two moves in ballet. She used the mechanical model, which resembled a knee, featuring the hip, the patella, the femur, and the tibia/fibula. Also included in the model, is a guitar string and a guitar tuning mechanism. These resemble the ligaments in the knee. Whenever you turn the tuning mechanism it will move the knee while putting tension on it as it bends.…

Graphs and charts are common tools used in science. To interpret graphs, read the axis labels as well as the numbers on the axis. The title should give you some clue as to the purpose of the graph. Next, examine the content. Try to describe the content in words, using “As ____(quantity on the x axis), ____(type of change, such as increases or decreases), ____ (quantity on the y axis) ___(type of change such as increases or decreases).” For example, the graph above could be described, “As time increases from 0 to 8 seconds, the velocity of Billy increases linearly from 0 to about 14 m/s.”…

Yes. It is possible to add energy to a body (in the form of heat) and not raise its temperature by causing a phase change. When you heat ice it takes energy to convert it from ice to water, but does not change the temperature of the body until it is all converted. The principle behind this is what we call latent heat. It refers to the energy (or heat) required to change the state of a substance without changing its temperature, the energy is used in breaking bonds in the structure of the material while changing state.…
