Kavan explains that Sleep Has His House ‘describes in the night-time language certain stages in the development of one individual human being.’ In relation to Kavan’s explanation of the novel, physical space can be related to the ‘certain stages’ of the novel, understood as the filtered spaces which the narrator is placed in. The psychological ‘development’ Kavan refers to can be defined as the psychological changes and progression, which are illustrated in conjunction with the physical spaces of the novel. The downward trend of B’s psychological development becomes evident in the setting of ‘THE ELMS’, the boarding school, the diction surrounding the ‘night-time world’ and the final house. Mallett argues that the concept of the home is contradictory, and that it ‘can be fundamental and/or extraneous to existence.’ The narrator of Sleep Has His House returns to the home setting of ‘THE ELMS’ throughout the novel, portraying the interrelation between self and space in regards to this specific setting. The narrator describes the home, explaining ‘we lived in a house full of things kept brightly polished.’ (Kavan,19) The diction of ‘kept’ emphasises human effort and façade, suggesting a gap between the realities of internal familial life and how the externalities of the house are manipulated and presented. This is further emphasised, as B describes that ‘all of the shine of the house was quenched by my mother’s sadness.’ (Kavan,19) This illustrates that a fundamental setting in B’s adolescence is defined by her mother’s relation to it. In this sense, A and the home become inseparable in the narrator’s mind. Within the unreliable setting of the home, B positions herself by describing, ‘invisible and unheard I scampered down secret tunnels beneath floor boards and walked a tightrope webbing among beams.’ (Kavan,27) The connotations of ‘invisible’, ‘unheard’ and ‘tightrope’ in relation to a childhood home creates a melancholy and dejected view of B’s upbringing. In ‘THE ELMS’, the psychological effects of the home become evident, as the features of the home reflect the negative mental state of the mother. This illustrates that A’s mental health led to B’s isolation in childhood. The setting of the boarding school illustrates to B her own inability to fit into expected roles, while the loud and exclusive nature of the setting leads to the narrator’s acknowledgement that she must rely on the night world for comfort. As B becomes further isolated and therefore more reliant on the physical space of the night world, it becomes more seductive in nature. This leads to the interpretation that her final home of the novel is the night world, an internalised physical space in her mind, suggesting that she has given

    In the story, “The Painted Door,” Sinclair Ross creates a mood of bitter cold, extreme isolation and loneliness. For the environmental means, the story is set in winter and there is a large snowstorm coming. The isolation of the farmland is made abundantly clear when we learn the closest neighbouring farm is “five miles away.” The physical setting of the environment is important to a good story as it reflects the moods and emotions of the characters and it gives the reader a glimpse into how the characters are feeling. The environment of a story can also be used to bring out issues between the characters or as a technique for foreshadowing what is to come later in the story. The mental setting of Ann is that of the physical environment. She has turned cold and indifferent toward her husband John; her feelings are stormy because she longs for another man but struggles with the guilt of it all. Both of these physical and mental settings contribute to the climax and conclusion of the story. The repetition of Ann’s feelings of boredom, loneliness and indifference all contribute to the reader really understanding her emotional turmoil. Ross also uses the physical description of the storm to describe the feelings of Anne towards the two men. She is conflicted and is going back and forth between hot and cold for both John and Steven. This emotion is also made clear with the help of describing the fire in the stove going from hot to cold and back to hot again. Sinclair Ross does a great job at using the flames and heat of the fire to describe her unresolved feelings for not only her husband, but for Steven as well. A great deal of this story is spent describing Ann’s environment, both inside and outside of her home. The barrenness of the surroundings in which the characters live is probably the most vividly expressed theme of the entire story and gives clues to how it is possible for Anne to engage…

    Self-consciousness is also discovered during early childhood in which children begin to have feelings of guilt, shame, or embarrassment. Fears start to take shape in a child’s life that can include the dark, monsters, or school. Children should be taught that some of the imaginary concepts should not be feared of such as the dark in which it is more fear of the unknown, and that by knowing by turning on the light switch, the things in the dark are not as frightening as imagined. Goodnight Moon is an excellent choice of book to teach children of the fears they could have including the dark or monsters which are common before bedtime. As objects are being named in the story, fears could also be brought up and discussed about which is an example of a symbol-real-world-relation. Also, it should come to surface of the understanding that school is to educate and assist in social development with peers, and not that the parent is there to abandon the child and will return routinely. Self- concept becomes more apparent starting in early childhood as the child grows which includes being aware of what one likes or dislikes, but not yet defining true personality traits. With Goodnight Moon, a parent could be actively involved with their child while reading and ask questions pertaining to the child’s likes and dislikes of certain objects and toys in the bedroom setting of the book and relate back to real life.     The natural landscape and the winter storm in “The Painted Door” serve as a metaphor for Ann’s sense of isolation. Sinclair Ross, the author of the short story, intelligently uses imagery to add atmosphere to the story and enhance the readers understanding of the emotions and mood of the protagonist, Ann. The isolation of the farmland is made abundantly clear as we learn the closest neighbouring farm is “five miles away,” and even then it would seem longer as the roads are “impassable.” However, Ann’s isolation is not entirely physical, she also feels very emotionally isolated from the one person who is supposed to be there with her. The emotional setting of Ann is that of the physical environment, isolated, bitter, and cold. Ann cannot seem to surpass the emotional blocks John has put up. Her words are “chilled” as she speaks to John indicating how she has turned cold and indifferent toward her husband. Ann’s geographic isolation eventually intensifies her feelings of loneliness to the point where she feels even alienated from her own husband. Although John knew the they “could expect a storm,” he left Ann alone amongst the “ever-lurking silence” to go help his father. Ann is feeling alienated from John and the storm is representing that alienation physically “isolating her [there] alone.” The earth is entirely “snowswept”. The bareness and simplicity of the surroundings, the “clear pale sun-chilled sky”, serve to “intensify a sense of isolation”. They compare to the lack of emotion John is showing towards Ann and his “simple mind”. Ann wants a more complex emotional relationship with John, to live a “dramatic” life, whereas John thinks that getting Ann material things, doing something “for her sake” will be what brings her happiness. However, Ann feels this only “deprives her of his companionship” which further adds to Ann’s sense of isolation. The storm parallels Ann and John’s broken relationship and “dry and empty” lives.     The story begins as the boy describes his neighborhood. Immediately feelings of isolation and hopelessness begin to set in. The street that the boy lives on is a dead end, right from the beginning he is trapped. In addition, he feels ignored by the houses on his street. Their brown imperturbable faces make him feel excluded from the decent lives within them. The street becomes a representation of the boy's self, uninhabited and detached, with the houses personified, and arguably more alive than the residents (Gray).
