Skinput
ABSTRACT We present Skinput , a technology that appropriates the human body for acoustic transmission, allowing the skin to be used as an input surface. In particular, we resolve the location of finger taps on the arm and hand by analyzing mechanical vibrations that propagate through the body. We collect these signals using a novel array of sensors worn a san armband. This approach provides an always available , naturally portable, and on-body finger input system. We assess the capabilities, accuracy and limitations of our technique through a two-part, twenty participant user study. To further illustrate the utility of our approach, we conclude with several proof-of-concept applications we developed.
Author Keywords Bio-acoustics, finger input, buttons, gestures, on-body interaction, projected displays, audio interfaces.
INTRODUCTION
Devices with significant computational power and capabilities can now be easily carried on our bodies. However, their small size typically leads to limited interaction space (e.g.,diminutive screens, buttons, and jog wheels) and consequently diminishes their usability and functionality. Since we cannot simply make buttons and screens larger without losing the primary benefit of small size, we consider alter-native approaches that enhance interactions with small mobile system. One option is to opportunistically appropriate surface are a from the environment for interactive purposes. For example, [10] describes a technique that allows a small mobile device to turn tables on which it rests into a gestural finger input canvas. However, tables are not always present, and in a mobile context, users are unlikely to want to carry appropriated surfaces with them (at this point, one might a swell just have a larger device). However, there is one surface that has been previous overlooked as an input canvas , and one that happens to always travel with us: our skin. Appropriating the human

The suspenseful Christian science fiction novel written by Ted Dekker, titled Skin, is set in the small town of Summerville, Nevada, which is surrounded by miles of desert. Wendy Davidson, an escapee from a cult, meets up with Nicole and Carey Swartz, who are two siblings that prefer to avoid discussion about their past. They go to find refuge in Summerville when three tornadoes touch down, and while searching for a doctor, stumble upon Colt Jackson, a police deputy. The four characters make their way to the town doctor’s house, which is built like a fortress. There they meet up with not the town doctor, but Jerry Pinkus, who is a professional gamer. All five of main characters are driven into the doctor’s library, where serial killer Sterling…

While there are some limitations to the scope of data that can be accessed and delivered to a mobile, equally there are a host of features, be it GPS or barcode scanning, which can open up new possibilities for how mobiles can deliver a fast, efficient and dynamic user experience. CPU performance tends to be more limited on mobile phones but it’s not about developing ‘desktop-lite’ versions of an application, it’s more about working with the innate advantages that the mobile device offers to create new ways of working and more innovative processes. Taking desktop applications to mobile devices demands a fresh approach; issues ranging from variations in screen size, multi-handset platforms, back-end connectivity and associated challenges such as performance, are signaling a new era of innovation in development.…

    Ear On Arm

Ear on Arm has involved the cultivation of a prosthetic ear out of cartilage and cells, several surgeries, and the insertion of a microphone and blue-tooth transmitter that would wirelessly broadcast to the Internet the sounds of Stelarc and his environment (Schwartzman 2015). It is located on his inner forearm, which is anatomically an optimal site due to thin, smooth skin, and ergonomically as there is a reduced risk of inadvertent damage. This extension of the body sees the body extruding its awareness and experience and acting as an extended operational system. Making the ear a remote listening device for people in other places. For example, someone in Venice could listen to what Stelarc's third ear is hearing in Melbourne. This project has been about replicating a bodily structure, relocating it and re-wiring it for alternate functions. Stelarc is now extending this project to include a blue tooth receiver and speaker which is positioned within his mouth. The intention…

The skin is an ever-changing organ that contains many specialized cells and structures. The skin functions as a protective barrier that interfaces with a sometimes-hostile environment. It is also very involved in maintaining the proper temperature for the body to function well. It gathers sensory information from the environment, and plays an active role in the immune system protecting us from disease. Understanding how the skin can function in these many ways starts with understanding the structure of the 3 layers of skin - the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.…

This bright Seventh grader attended McClenton Middle School where she dealt with all the issues that come with trying to fit in and be accepted by your peers. These issues along with the death of Maleeka’s dad a couple years ago started to become very overwhelming and caused her to conduct herself in ways that mad e no sense at all. Although so many people didn’t understand what exactly was going on with her, there was one teacher, Miss Saunders who knew and had experienced the things she was feeling all too well.…
